Board Games, Card Games, Miniature Games, RPGs, Tabletop Games

5 on Friday 10/07/20

It’s Friday, and here on No Rerolls that means it’s time for an all-new 5 on Friday. We’re going to start with 5 exciting releases for this week before moving on to our usual digest of some of our favourite articles from the past week. Of course, we’re slow readers, so don’t be surprised if there are some articles that are a little older – these are just some of the great articles we happen to have actually read in the past week.

releases and previews

Every week there are many games and miniatures released. This will probably be a mix of previews, preorders and releases, and with release dates being the way they are in this industry, it’s always pretty approximate. Excuses out of the way, here are 5 of the releases that caught our attention this week:

Games Workshop releases General’s Handbook 2020 for Age of Sigmar – I like that Games Workshop are treating their games as “living” rulesets these days.  They put out annuals for each game which update rules, points values and give additional content.  I’ve got the Warcry and Kill Team annuals on the shelf beside me as I type.  Now, they are releasing the new Age of Sigmar annual, the General’s Handbook:

I know that my own army suffers a little from yet more point increases for the Pink Horrors…  Bah!  Otherwise, the book promises new senarios, tournament rules, objectives, terrain rules, and more.  If you play AoS with any regularity, the General’s handbook is pretty much compulsory reading each year.

Mongoose releases Drinaxian Companion for Traveller – I love my Pirates of Drinax set.  It’s not only beautiful, but it’s also packed full of great content, both in terms of fiction and background, and rules and resources.  Now, Mongoose has put out a new companion book:

There’s a lot of content in here.  This is the list from the publisher:

    • Guidance on running the campaign with new perspectives and schemes the Travellers can attempt.
    • A complete Assets and Factions system, allowing the Travellers to build a network of havens and supporting organisations across the sector.
    • A detailed look at the nature of piracy and counters to it.
    • Rules for building pirate bases from scratch, ensuring there is always a safe place to run to when the Imperial Navy arrives.
    • A deep dive into specific locations and patrons found within the Trojan Reach.
    • Stories From Sindal, a system that allows Travellers to research and chase up rumours of caches and other secrets from the lost Sindalian Empire.
    • Personalities and factions from the Trojan Reach, ready to be inserted into any campaign,
    • First Prize, an introductory adventure that can be played before Pirates of Drinax to introduce Travellers to the wonderful world of piracy!

Most of this content is harvested from previously-available PDFs.  This means that if you’ve already purchased these PDFs, this might not represent quite the same value as it would for someone who, like me, never picked those up.

Fat Dragon launches Vallis Mortis Kickstarter campaign – I’ve been doing a lot of 3D printed terrain recently, but I’ve not really done any of the Openlock/Dragonlock modular dungeon stuff.  This set takes the Dragonlock format and creates a fantasy cityscape:

I like how comprehensive this set seems to be, and I love the freedom it gives you to design your own buildings.  Although I’ve not got most of my town printed off, this is really tempting.  My question is whether I have the patience for all the wee accessories, too…

Nighstalkers for Kings of War up for preorder – I always say that Mantic’s miniatures are somewhat hit or miss.  In this case, it’s definitely a hit.  These Nightstalkers are beautiful, brutal, sinister miniatures that I could see use for in a lot of contexts.  Very cool!

Price-wise, I feel Mantic are creeping up a bit to the point that they’re just not quite the same sort of value that they used to be.  £18 seems reasonable for this chap, I suppose.

Kraken Fantasy Stadiums available on Kickstarter – This is timely.  We’ve just rounded off an online Blood Bowl league in our local club, and Blood Bowl is therefore firmly in our collective consciousness.  Indeed, someone just the other day was musing about 3D printing a stadium.  Well, look here!

It looks great!  This is a cool, modular, tile-based solution that you can download and print out at home with a printer and a few spools of filament.  By coincidence, as I was typing this, a big box of three spools just arrived at the door!  Is it a sign?

blog posts and articles

The meat of 5 on Friday, the articles are listed in no particular order, so let’s get into some recommendations:

Shed News @ Steinberg Shed Space I follow this blog quite closely and it’s been a lot of fun watching the author’s new hobby space take shape.  I must say that I am impressed with how organised he is!

Remembering Netrunner @ SpalanzI remember Netrunner.  I loved it!  I never got to play it all that much, and I’m far from having a complete set – so it was sad to see it discontinued.  The author of this article was much more into the game than I was, and it’s nice to take a stroll with them down memory lane.

A Slice of Life on Tatooine – An Introduction to Star Wars Tabletop RPGs @ Twin Canon Archives – A good potted history of Star Wars RPGs.  I’ve atually done similar articles myself!  This is a long, detailed article that looks at the strengths of different systems and comes to a pretty balanced conclusion by the end.  Worth a read if you’re a Star Wars fan!

Venturing into Frostgrave @ Scott’s Game Roomlike the author of this article, I am also new to Frostgrave.  It’s a good time to get into it, actually, what with the edition coming out very soon.  I like the gradual approach that the author took, starting off by using Lego to get started with the game before picking up and playing with some suitable miniatures.  This makes for a good read on getting started in a new miniatures game.

Introduction @ Blood Guard – A nice, wee introduction for a new blog!  Welcome, and good luck with the painting motivation!  The army you show is really cool, how about some closeup shots?

At NoRerolls, we’ve actually been absent for a couple of weeks due to work commitments.  It’s been a heavy time!

Catch y’all later!
