5 on Friday 21/01/22

It’s Friday, and here on No Rerolls that means it’s time for an all-new 5 on Friday. We’re going to start with 5 exciting releases for this week before moving on to our usual digest of some of our favourite articles from the past week. Of course, we’re slow readers, so don’t be surprised if there are some articles that are a little older – these are just some of the great articles we happen to have actually read in the past week.

Releases & Previews

Every week there are many games and miniatures released. This will probably be a mix of previews, preorders and releases, and with release dates being the way they are in this industry, it’s always pretty approximate. Excuses out of the way, here are 5 of the releases that caught our attention this week:

Games Workshop releases Fury of the Deep boxed for Age of Sigmar – These two-player boxed sets that Games Workshop puts out are pretty good. As I mentioned recently, I picked up the Genestealer Cults half of the last 40K set. This one is a bit unusual, as it features two forces from the same Grand Alliance – Order in this case – facing off against one another:

The Idoneth Deepkin is an army that did not really appeal to me when it was released but it has really grown on me over time. Their big sea creatures are especially great. The Fyreslayers are just fantastic. Like, really great. This is a cool set, and it shows that it’s not just Morathi who is causing tensions in the ranks of the Grand Alliance of Order…

Across a Thousand Dead Worlds, a new Sci-Fi RPG, now up on Kickstarter – I love horror games. I love sci-fi games. This sci-fi horror game should therefore be right up my street, eh? It’s also all about exploration, which is another big positive for me.

The game doesn’t need a GM, which is unusual, but not unheard of. Reading through the campaign page, this actually feels really, really cool. I think this has the potential to be quite bleak in tone. This might sound bad, but it isn’t to me. I don’t know what that says about me, but I am what I am.

Deeply Dapper Games releases their RPG, 3DIE6, on DriveThruRPGIt was the cover art that grabbed my attention, here. The wee ant-like dude off on an adventure was a cool concept that grabbed me right away:

Reading a wee bit further, I like the idea of this game Subterranean adventures in a shroomtastic setting? Yes, please! The multiple hive-minds concept is also really cool. The system is not one I’m familiar with, but it promises to be reasonably smooth and utilising, as the name suggests, three six-sided dice for most checks. As an inexpensive indie title with some unique-sounding features, it might be worth a punt.

Darrington Press releases a new Tal’Dorei setting book for 5E – I make little secret of the fact that I’m not really a fan of Critical Role. It’s fine. It’s fine. It’s just a bit… overhyped and it seems to bring people into the hobby with slightly skewed expectations. I also really objected to Wizards of the Coast wasting space on their already-sparse release schedule on what boiled down to a CR fanfic book. Ugh, no. Third-party publishers, though? Oh, lash it, lads:

As fantasy settings go, Tal’Dorei feels fine. It’s quite generic, but there’s a place for that. The thing is, I’m just not the target for this. There are a lot of fans who will be all over this. I’ve got friends who have already ordered it, and that’s great. Diversity of opinion in the hobby is a great thing and Critical Role brings happy feels to lots and lots of people.

Mongoose releases The Spinward Extents supplement for Traveller on DriveThruRPG – MOAR TRAVELLER! Mongoose certainly churns out these books, whether physical or PDF. This edition of the venerable sci-fi RPG is very well served by the volume and apparent quality of content that is put out for it. This latest offering is a supplement that covers a pair of sectors:

These sectors are The Beyond and the Vanguard Reaches. Interestingly, there’s a lot of scope for alien involvement in both sectors as they see borders between the Third Imperium (see last week’s 5 on Friday) and a number of other powers. Lots of opportunities here for the warrior, the profiteer, the diplomat, and the general mercenary troubleshooter.

Blog Posts & Articles

The meat of 5 on Friday, the articles are listed in no particular order, so let’s get into some recommendations:

Top Three Lists from Tempest @ Woehammer  I wish I’d thought sooner about going to Tempest. I think I’d have enjoyed myself a lot. I like the people involved as well. I also really like the “extra” list they looked at. It’s a lot of fun to see a Skaven list getting some attention, especially when it’s Cara’s. One of her previous armies will appear as inspiration in an upcoming wishlisting article, actually.

Download Call of Cthulhu 7ed Autocalc Character Sheet Set @ Myth-O-Logic Really useful! Thanks so much for sharing this, as it will be right handy for a lot of folk. I love it when people make cool, wee tools like this.

The Genestealer Cults Codex is here! @ Spalanz With the Genestealer Cults book being released last week, there have been a lot of really good articles and posts about it. This is one such post. I quite like the 1K list in the post. I’m not sure if it’s actually good or not, but it covers a lot of things I’d want to try out, so it would be interesting/fun to field! The commentary with it is really interesting, too.

Loot Lists – 20 Bookmarks for Your Found Tomes @ A Geek for All Seasons – So, this isn’t some huge and incredibly detailed or important resource, but I like it for its simplicity. It’s just a stack of descriptions for suitably Call-of-Cthulhu-themed bookmarks to use in your games. Yeah, just a cool, wee list that can help you improve the descriptiveness of your games.

Lazy Painter’s Army List: Genestealer Cults @ Heresy & Heroes Another Genestealer Cults article, this one looks at a comparatively model-light list. What appeals to me about list is that it focuses really heavily on vehicles and fast units, as I suggested I’d like in my original wishlisting article about the GSC. All those Ridgerunners… One of the things that have put me off 40K for a long time is the idea of painting vehicles. Guess I’ll be getting over that. Those Ridgerunners… It’s tempting, likes… Yeah, this is a fun article with a cool list and is, I believe, a terrible influence…

On No Rerolls this week, I’ve done one of my wishlisting posts. I love these posts, as I do like to think about cool ideas for projects, even if it’s unlikely that I’m really going to follow up on them.

Catch ya’ll next week!
