Feb 2022 – How Go the Goals?

Well, we’re well into 2022 now. I’m a week late with this post as well, which has languished in my drafts folder, but it’s here now! So, how am I doing with those hobby goals that I set myself for the coming year? I actually think that I’m off to a pretty good start, all things considered. I had a very productive January, a pretty unproductive February, and I’m off to a good start in March.

let’s jump straight in with the painting goals for 2022:

  • 2,000 points of additional Maggotkin of Nurgle: Not Started. I have most of what I need to do this goal, but it’s not been the most pressing or interesting target. I might move on to getting some of this done once I’m done with the Troggoths.
  • Complete my 2,000 points of Troggoths: Progressing Well. I am getting there! I’ve recently finished up the last of my Rockguts and updated some photos in the gallery. I’m currently working on 9 Fellwater Troggoths and expect to finish them within the next few days. After that, I’ve got the Troggboss to finish up, along with a Fungoid Shaman, Rippa’s Snarlfangs and a couple of allied Kruleboyz units. I could see these being done by the end of April at the latest.
  • 2,000 points of Sons of Behemat: Completed. This unexpectedly ended up being my first project of 2022. I was quite chuffed that I managed to get them all finished by the end of January. It was nice to upload the images to the gallery page, showing a completed army. I say finished. I’d like, at some point, to add aniother Kraken Eater… and maybe a pair of Gate Breakers… and a couple more Mancrushers…
  • 1,250 of Genestealer Cults: Not Started. There’s a lot to this book. I think that 9th edition 40K really struggles from an excess of rules and the GSC feel needlessly complex. That said, I still love the models! I have started working out how to approach their bases and I’d like to maybe make a start on this force in the summer.

I’m pretty happy with this, really. The Sons of Behemat are done, the Troggs are getting there, and I’m pumped for having a go at the rest. The GSC are daunting, but once I have a colour scheme, I’m sure I’ll be fine.

In addition to the firm goals above, I also mused about some other projects that I have on the go. I’m not too fussed if I don’t get around to these this year, but it would be nice to make some progress on them:

  • A couple of forces for some Osprey wargames:  Some progress. A perennial – if often low-priority – target. I’ve got a box of Frostgrave soldiers built and primed. I’ve also just finished up a suitable wizard and apprentice duo to lead them. I’d intended to do the soldiers in blue, but I actually think a nice, dark green will be fitting.
  • Complete my 2,000 points of Squigs:  No Progress. I think this one might slide down the priority list a bit. I’m enjoying working on my Gloomspite Gitz in the form of the Troggoths, but I’m in no rush to a lot more of them immediately. Might be a force for later, or something I pick away at.
  • 2,000 points of Kruleboyz:  No Progress. More Orruks! I’ll be painting the Breakaboss and the Marshcrawla very soon as part of my Troggoth army. Beyond that, I’m not sure when I’ll be starting on these guys.
  • 2,000 points of Slaves to Darkness:  Minimal progress. I’m very happy with some of the conversions that I’ve done for this army. I’m finding it hard to really get motivated for the painting. My next step with this army will be to finish my Warshrine conversion and then break out the green stuff to finish off the Manticore and Soul Grinder conversions. Maybe also get a second Daemon Prince converted up (from the old, metal Great Unclean One), as I would like to run these as Despoilers.

Some exciting stuff here, and some other bits that are maybe not as big a priority as they previously were. That’s fine. That’s okay. Priorities change and the hobby interest lives on.

Finally, it would not be me if I were not eyeing up anything else… This is a newer project that is definitely happening:

I’m also swithering over some Beastclaw Raiders or Bonesplitterz. I just really love the forces of Destruction! And I have store credit sitting, burning a hole in my pocket.

All in all, not bad. I’ve managed to paint a fully usable Sons of Behemat army this year, and I’m well on track to have a usable Gloomspite Gitz one. I mean, I have enough painted already to be usable, but I’d like a full Troggoth force!

I will be expanding my Maggotkin this year, taking them from a usable force to one with some flexibility as well. The Genestealer Cults army is also quite exciting, but a little bit daunting. I don’t know 40K as well. I don’t think it’s as good a game as Age of Sigmar. I just really like the minis.

These last two projects may find themselves pushed back a little with the introduction of the Soulblight Gravelords, but that’s ok. Being adaptable is important and of course I’m going to focus on stuff that I’m interested in.

Something comparatively small that I also need to get around to is some basing for my Ironjawz. I bought this army from a friend and I absolutely love them. I just need to rebase them to bring them in line with my other Destruction forces.

So, yeah, a good start to 2022!
