Throwback Thursday: First Impressions of Rex

For a time, there was a real demand for a reprint of the classic Dune board game, but the Frank Herbert estate was very reluctant to issue a license. More recently, that attitude has changed and a remake of the game was released and was well-received. Before this change of heart, Fantasy Flight Games released a reskin of the game, removing the Dune theme in favour of their own Twilight Imperium universe.

The game is, of course, beautiful. The art is solid and the board is both pretty and functional. The game itself interesting, especially when played, as we did, with the full, maximum number of players. Something I particularly loved was how alliances worked, including the fact that you could only change these pacts when certain cards appeared, essentially holding you to your alliance for longer than you might otherwise have wanted.

I’ve not played this game in a couple of year, and now with the Galeforce 9 edition of Dune out, I’m not sure if I’d just look to play that instead. Either way, Rex is a lot of fun!
