Kickstarter-Watch: MÖRK BOLL

Okay, so there are a couple of steps to go through on this one. Bear with me… You already know about MÖRK BORG. It’s that cool, beautifully designed apocalyptic fantasy RPG. You’ve likely heard of it. I like it. Now, that brings us to our next point on this jaunty, little journey…

K.R.D Designs took MÖRK BORG and, under their third-party license, produced a MÖRK BORG-compatible miniatures game called Forbidden Psalm. This was well-received by several content creators who wrote positive articles and made videos full of praise for the book.

Great. Okay. Almost there.

Now, the creator of Forbidden Psalm, who has already released a load of supplements for the game, is releasing another MÖRK BORG and Forbidden Psalm-compatible game, MÖRK BOLL. Whereas Forbidden Psalm is a miniature skirmish game, this is a fantasy football game in the same vein as Blood Bowl or Dreadball.

We got there!

Now, I often complain that some Kickstarters can overly complicate their pledges, giving a whole range of different rewards in different combinations at different prices, etc. It’s unnecessary. This is a simple one. Three pledges. There’s a £3,000 pledge level that appears to be a joke, an £8 level that gets you the PDF, and a £12 pledge level that gets your name in the PDF, though this was a limited pledge that is now sold out. Essentially, we’re looking at £8 for the PDF rulebook.

The production quality of K.R.D’s books seems to be pretty decent, and the definitely follow the design cues established by MÖRK BORG. Here are a few sample pages from the PDF rulebook to give you a little taste of what you can expect from this title:

There’s not a huge amount on the page about the game itself. There’s a bit of an assumption that most people backing this game will already have a working knowledge of MÖRK BORG or Forbidden Psalm. I can’t say I know anything about Forbidden Psalm, but having now looked into it I can see myself trying to find out more. It actually sounds really cool.

Listen to Uncle Adam espouse praise for Forbidden Psalm:

In terms of value, I’ve already given the price for the book. I think this is pretty reasonable. £8 feels fair for a fantasy football game. I also really like that the author is upfront about why he wants to seek funds via Kickstarter for a book that is already written and has essentially no distribution costs. It’s art. He wants to commission more art for the book. I can respect that.

The campaign itself could use a bit more about the core gameplay and perhaps some content from a third-party creator, or even just a first-party play demonstration. It would make a huge difference to see the game actually played.

So, yeah, let’s see. This is a good product at a good price, but it would help to know a little more. All in all, I’d encourage backing.
