Creator Spotlight: Lost Hobbyist

In the first of a series of profiles of different online content creators, we’re taking a look today at Lost Hobbyist. They are the purveyors of pop-culture-themed 3D models for hobbyist to print off at home. Their offerings are generally based around books, movies, and video games.

Lost Hobbyist first game to my attention for their Discworld-themed miniatures. They’ve done a fair few now, including the Night Watch, the Witches, the Wizards, the Nac Mac Feegle, Cohen’s Barbarians, and more. Here are a few samples of what they offer in three of their Discworld-themed sets:

I’ve printed the Wizards set, myself. The only slightly issue I had was repeated failed prints of the cloud that one of the wizards sat on. I ended up ditching the pre-supported version and redoing it with my own supports, which worked fine. These are really cool minis with buckets of personality.

One thing I really love about their sets is that, in most cases, the set can either be printed as a straight set of miniatures or as a fantasy football team. Most sets come with alternative heads and hands to make that work. Great for Blood Bowl fans who want something a bit different!

With their love of Discworld, it’s clear that Lost Hobbyist shares similar tastes to my own. Another of these interests is a love of classic LucasArts adventure games. I adore Monkey Island, and it’s cool they have a few sets with Monkey Island miniatures in them. There are more than these two, but here’s a taste:

I’d really love to see a Grim Fandango-themed set. That would be incredible. Like, truly. Unfortunately, the Lost Hobbyist patrons as masochists and luddites who insist on voting for the wrong things. We’ll come to that at the end of this post.

There are more video game sets! Two of these are a Sonic-themed set and, in another great LucasArts-themed set, Day of the Tentacle!

Great choices! The Tentacle set does lack the variety that we see in other sets, but it’s still really fantastic. The tentacles are pretty simple, but they pack a lot of personality. The Sonic set has some really cool robots (Badniks!) and are particularly great for using as a robot-themed Blood Bowl Team. Sonic would be great as a speedy Star Player, I think. I wonder how some of those items would print, but I’m quite trusting of Lost Hobbyist, given the ease of printing for the Wizards with their very fine detail in places (mainly the pieces of paper).

One more set that really grabbed my attention was this set of pygmies and birds. They also have a couple of miniatures to represent a pretty recognisable archeologist:

These are cool, wee minis. I really like the Indiana Jones miniatures as well. The mask being carried by Indy reminds me of Crash Bandicoot, too.

Now, I’ll be honest in that not all sets really interest me. The last two months have been a tad disappointing for me, largely because of the aforementioned Patrons voting in a way that is wrong. Do they not understand that it is my opinion that matter? Outrageous.

That said, the quality of these miniatures is not in question. The mummies from January and February’s Holy Grail sets are both very pretty. I just don’t really see myself really using them. Still great, though!

Next month looks like it will be Evil Dead or Space Balls. Neither is my preference, but Space Balls will at least be really cool and more unique.

As is common with creators who use both Patreon and MyMiniFactory, signing up for a membership will give you really significant discounts on the back-catalogue. I’ve used this discount myself and have been delighted with the outcome.

I heartily recommend LostHobbyist!
