Throwback Thursday: Asymmetry in Board Games

I don’t write about board games as often as I used to. I just don’t think there’s much to say beyond reviewing individual games. The industry seems increasingly stale, based on studio after studio owned by Asmodee, and on Kickstarter campaigns that are either bloated or cynically used by established companies as a mere storefront. There are some absolute gems, of course, and there’s still some truly terrific creativity on display, but I’m talking about the bulk of what’s out there.

Let’s look back through the mists of time to a point where I was truly excited for the industry; the tail end of the most recent golden age of board games. This is a post from 2017 about asymmetry, and why it’s so fun and interesting in games.

Most of my favourite games feature elements of asymmetry. Player Powers, different setups or decks, or even games where the players are each playing a very different game.

My go-to examples would probably be different today, but my points still stand:
