5 on Friday 27/10/23

It’s Friday, and here on No Rerolls that means it’s time for an all-new 5 on Friday. We’re going to start with 5 exciting releases for this week before moving on to our usual digest of some of our favourite articles from the past week. Of course, we’re slow readers, so don’t be surprised if there are some articles that are a little older – these are just some of the great articles we happen to have actually read in the past week.

Releases & Previews

Every week there are many games, books, and miniatures released. This will probably be a mix of previews, preorders, and releases, and with release dates being the way they are in this industry, it’s always pretty approximate. Excuses out of the way, here are 5 of the releases that caught our attention this week:

Games Workshop releases Arachni-Rigs for Necromunda – Games Workshop continues to put out more and more content for Necromunda. As we move further away from the simple, standard gangs, things are getting more and more elaborate. The game is starting to look a wee bit messy, truth be told. That said, the models are gorgeous

I think that I will get around at some point to doing a Van Saar gang. I’ve got a gang and some other bits and pieces already. If I get into it, I’d definitely pick these up, just because of how pretty they are. I do like how each gang’s technology fits their themes really well. It would be easy for these things to be a bit samey, but they’ve avoided that.

Get your own Mjolnir on Kickstarter –  I tend to link hobby-related Kickstarter campaigns here, but I had to make an exception for this one. As much as it’s something I couldn’t see myself backing, you can’t deny that it’s damn cool:

As much as $350 is a decent chunk of change, it actually seems pretty reasonable for a hand-crafted item like this. Based on the God of War franchise (which I genuinely know nothing about), it’s truly beautiful and I suggest that you visit the project page and watch the video to see exactly what you’re getting. This is more than just a piece of memorabilia.

Corvus Belli releases Aftermath Character Pack for Infinity – Corvus Belli continues to put out amazing miniatures for Infinity. This time, it’s a cool character pack:

The highlights for me are the big guy with the awesome beard and the cheeky chappy at the front. I actually think this would be better for the Infinity RPG, giving some cool models for a pre-generated party. I might do that, actually…

Sabotage Showndown, a Mission pack, released for Shatterpoint – I’m still resisting. I’m still resisting. I’m still resisting. If I repeat it enough, I might just believe it…

This is just a little mission pack for Shatterpoint, giving more options for play. When I take the plunge, I’m still not sure if it’s going to be Shatterpoint or Crisis Protocol.  I guess we’ll see when the time comes to empty my bank account.

Games Workshop releases Stormvault carry case –  Last time Games Workshop replaced their cases it was a big departure from what came before. They moved from the trays of foam with rectangular holes cut out, to a more flexible foam intended to fit around their more recent, more irregularly-shaped miniatures. This time, it’s an even bigger departure:

It looks a bit like an iron maiden, but it seemingly works. The foam is gone, and replaced with silicone bristles to grip your miniatures. Will there be suitable protection? Probably. Is rubbing a potential issue? I don’t know. Capacity is low, but it’s for skirmish games with lower model counts, so that’s fine. Yeah, this is interesting. I’m looking forward to seeing if they catch on.

Blog Posts & Articles

The meat of 5 on Friday, the articles are listed in no particular order, so let’s get into some recommendations:

Six Nations Lists: Six Takeaways @ Woehammer – This is an interesting rundown and initial thoughts on the lists for the upcoming Six Nations. I’m delighted that the age of the Lumineth Sentinel is over. The amount of blizzard on display, on the other hand, makes me sad in my heart. A good read.

Guiding the Ironlands – how to run Ironsworn as a One-Shot @ Burn After Running A while back, in a post about inclusivity in gaming, I took a wee look at Ironsworn. It seemed pretty cool, actually!  There’s solid advice here on running the game. The bit I agree most with is pregens. Use them. If you’re playing a one-shot, why waste so much time on creating characters who will ultimately just be discarded after the game? Players can still put their own stamp on their characters through roleplaying decisions.

Mr. President – Storage Solution from Rails on Boards @ Dude! Take Your Turn! Mr. President continues to look really interesting to me, and I’m really looking forward to reading more about it from Dude! Take Your Turn! They’re one of the best places for GMT stuff. This post though… well, it just underlines that Mr. President seems to be a lot. The sheet logistics of setting up and taking down this solo game is what puts me off.

Escape from Babel @ A loft full of lead This board looks great! Between the landing pads and all the cool ships, this is a great setup for a game of Stargrave. Fantastic!

Bonesplitterz at Sovereign Smash Part Two: The One Where Pete Gets His Arse Handed To Him @ Plastic Craic A good, and self-effacing writeup of an event from someone who continues to use Bonesplitterz for some reason. I’m kidding; the Bonesplitterz are cool. Just don’t expect to, like, win.

There have been a few posts since my last 5 on Friday:

This week I am going to finish a second Malifaux crew. That’s my goal. I’m hoping to do it before the end of the month, too!

Catch y’all soon!
