5 on Friday 03/11/23

It’s Friday, and here on No Rerolls that means it’s time for an all-new 5 on Friday. We’re going to start with 5 exciting releases for this week before moving on to our usual digest of some of our favourite articles from the past week. Of course, we’re slow readers, so don’t be surprised if there are some articles that are a little older – these are just some of the great articles we happen to have actually read in the past week.

Releases & Previews

Every week there are many games, books, and miniatures released. This will probably be a mix of previews, preorders, and releases, and with release dates being the way they are in this industry, it’s always pretty approximate. Excuses out of the way, here are 5 of the releases that caught our attention this week:

Games Workshop releases the third Dawnbringers book, The Long Hunt – This is the first time I’ve really followed along with a set of campaign books from GW as they’ve come out. I’m enjoying them, all in all. The content is interesting, if not always that well thought out.

The thing I am curious to see in this offering is the all-dragon Stormcast army. Could this finally be the answer to what to do with my Goblin Raceway/junkers army? Could be exciting!

Free League releases solo rules for Vaesen –  Vaesen is a unique horror RPG. It’s firmly rooted, thematically, in the mythology and folklore of Sweden (and other countries via expansions and supplements) and has a wonderfully muted art style.

This latest supplement is not one that will necessarily interest me, but I understand that it will interest others. This is all about solo play, and equips you with a set of rules to play Vaesen by yourself. I’ve never really seen the appeal of this, but I know that others really love solo roleplay. If it opens up Vaesen to more players, then this is a good prospect!

Scions of Jutland fleet released for Dystopian Wars – Dystopian Wars is an interesting one. I like the minis, and I’ve previously painted an Italian fleet for the game; though I’m not sure if they are still a thing in the current edition. I’m not so convinced by the rules. It feels a bit dry. The models are still very tempting, though…

This Scions of Jutland box feels like a decent proposition, value-wise, and I do like the ship design. They also come with some cool robots. They’re not as cool as the big mechanical squids that other armies can take, but they still look suitably menacing!

Eerie Idol Games currently running a Kickstarter campaign for their new board game, The Old King’s Crown – This game looks beautiful. It’s gorgeous. It’s busy and it’s colourful, and it’s just braw. It’s also Scottish-made, which is always a plus!

With 20 days to go, this game has already smashed its funding goals, and it’s not hard to see why. The campaign looks so professional, and there’s the added credibility that comes from the game designer having previously come up with the fantastic strategy game, Root.

Proliferation Cycle boxed set released for Battletech –  Battletech seems fun and has some cool minis, but I do sometimes worry that if I were to take it up then I might have to associate with Battletech players. A sobering thought, that…

The minis are good, solid mech designs at a decent price. In addition, although I could play Battletech with them, I could also play other mech games, like Gamma Wolves. That game looks really interesting, and it’s tempting to pick up some nice mechs for use with it.

Blog Posts & Articles

The meat of 5 on Friday, the articles are listed in no particular order, so let’s get into some recommendations:

Warhammer AoS Battleforce Boxes 2023 – How Much and What’s in Them? @ Woehammer – A good rundown of the contents and value of the Christmas boxes. There are only 4 this year, which is a bit disappointing, but they all seem decent. The Seraphon one is particularly nice.

Orktober is Over – How Did it Go? @ A Tabletop Gamer’s Diary This is impressive. The sheer amount that they’ve managed to get through in October (sorry, Orktober) has been astounding. It’s great to see some appreciation of the Orruks!

October 2023 Gaming @ Dude! Take Your Turn! A good month of games! Cannae beat some Twilight Struggle. Combat Commander is one I need to try at some point. Ark Nova, I keep getting told is fantastic.

Zona Alfa @ 28mm Modern Wargaming Still one I need to get around to trying, Zona Alfa looks like a lot of fun. I need to look at getting some suitable minis done so I can give it a good go!

Dungeon Keeper 2 @ Inside My Shell I Milk and Hate A good writeup on Dungeon Keeper 2, and particularly astute as to how it compares to the original. I completely agree and I can’t understand why some people really prefer the second game over the original.

There have been a few posts since my last 5 on Friday:

In the past couple of days, I’ve been working on some Malifaux tokens, so I’ll be sharing those in the coming week. Tomorrow, instead of our usual RPG content, I’ll be doing October’s Resolutions Roundup.

Catch y’all soon!
