The Hobby Appeal of AOS4’s Spearhead

The fourth edition of Age of Sigmar is nearly upon us.  People are getting hyped up (or wound up) by the various reviews and Faction Focus articles that Games Workshop has been putting out.

One aspect of the new edition that has grabbed more attention than I had initially expected is Spearhead; Age of Sigmar’s answer to Warahmmer 40,000’s Combat Patrol.  This is an alternative way to play, and once which uses a simplified set of rules in which one of the starter Spearhead boxes (formerly Vanguard sets) is picked up and used as-is.

The game seems engaging, accessible, and fun.  It also seems manageable, time-wise.  Our club will hopefully be putting on a Spearhead event to go along with the launch of the new edition.

I was kind of sleeping on Spearhead when it was first announced.  I don’t generally like smaller games and would usually just prefer to trot out 2,000 points.  The shift in mindset will be to think about Spearhead as not just a smaller version of Age of Sigmar, but as its own thing.  That’ll take some slight adjustment, and that’s okay.

Speaking to others, they’re seeing it as a chance to explore different areas of the hobby, and that definitely appeals to me. There’s something nice about just doing a Spearhead force for an army that visually or conceptually appeals, but which you do not want to fully commit. Similarly, it’s a chance to do a nice conversion or printing project.

There’s a lot of potential here! I’m going to have a look at some options over the next couple of weeks, as this has really caught my imagination!
