Yesterday I mentioned that I was interested in the new Spearhead rules for the upcoming fourth edition of Age of Sigmar. In order to play this game, you need to be able to field the contents of one of the Spearhead boxes. Often these represent good entry points into a given army, but sometimes we’d already started these armies before the box was released. So, then, of the armies I currently collect, what Spearheads can I field, and how much work will it take to have a painted, fieldable Spearhead for each?
Let’s tackle these in no particular order…
Sons of Behemat
The Sons are getting a Spearhead for the first time in AOS4. We’ve not really had a starter set up to now… and we still don’t. Basically, they’ve taken the current box of three Mancrushers and presented these as the spearhead:

Longtime readers will know that I can definitely field this Spearhead. The list I am currently using for my SoB army has 12 of the chaps in it. Here are some pics of my finished Mancrushers which can be incorporated into the Spearhead:

Yeah, I could happily field this one four times over! I just hope the Spearhead rules manage to make them more interesting to play than I fear they might be.
Kharadron Overlords
The Kharadron Overlords latest boxed set contains a nice mix of miniatures:
- 1x Arkanaut Admiral
- 1x Arkanaut Frigate
- 3x Endrinriggers
- 10x Arkanaut Company

I can field this! I have never shared pictures of my Kharadron Overlords, largely because I didn’t actually paint them. Here’s a shot of the Frigate from the Instagram of the clubmate from whom I bought the army:
Gorgeous, innit?
I’ve only brought the KO to the table three times so far, so maybe some Spearhead is my way in with them?
Disciples of Tzeentch
I loved painting my Disciples of Tzeentch, and I’m pretty happy with how colourful they ended up being. My own lists have been quite different to what’s in the Spearhead:
- 1x Magister on Disc of Tzeentch
- 3x Screamers of Tzeentch
- 3x Flamers of Tzeentch
- 10x Tzaangors
- 10x Kairic Acolytes

The bulk of this set are models that I have finished. I’ve got 10 Tzaangor and 10 Kairic Acolytes painted and good to go:

The rest of the set are models that I have, but have not yet painted. I’ve got plenty of Flamers that I will paint for my 40K army, and which will be right at home here. This set will take a bit of work to bring up to a usable state.
Slaves to Darkness
I really went into my Slaves to Darkness with the best of intentions, intending to use them as a natural offshoot of my beloved Maggotkin army. It didn’t really pan out and I’ve not followed through on it at all. To field a Spearhead force, I need the following miniatures:
- 1x Chaos Lord
- 1x Chaos Chariot
- 10x Chaos Warriors
- 5x Chaos Knights

I’m nowhere near having this set ready. I’ve only finished the Chaos Lord. That said, I’ve done most of the conversions and building on the warriors and knights, so there is that:

The big gap is the chariot. I’d need to find something suitably Nurgley. There will be plenty of options out there; I’ve just now looked lately. It’s a cool idea, certainly, and worth exploring a bit.
Ogor Mawtribes
Despite the terrible, terrible preview of Ogors in AOS4, I still love my tubby boys. The side of the army I really love would be the Beastclaw side, whilst the Spearhead doesn’t focus on this aspect of the faction. Still, it looks fun:
- 1x Tyrant
- 1x Ironblaster
- 2x Mournfang Riders
- 4x Leadbelchers
- 6x Gluttons

I’ve got more than half of the box painted, so we’re in a good way!

I’d only need to paint the Leadbelchers and Ironblaster. The Ironblaster would be a fair bit of work, but the Leadbelchers will take no time. Seriously, the Ogors are so quick to paint!
Gloomspite Gitz
If I could only keep one of my armies, it would be the Gitz. They’re just the best. I’m not the biggest fan of the Spearhead for them, as it feels unfocused, giving a bunch of units with no synergy between them. They’re all gorgeous, though!
- 1x Loonboss
- 3x Rockgut Troggoths
- 10x Squig Hoppers
- 20x Moonclan Stabbas

I can field this! I’ve got all of it painted up and good to go.

Yeah, I have a ridiculous amount of painted Gitz, so I’d have hoped that whatever was in the set, I’d have been able to field it!
Soulblight Gravelords
As with the Slaves to Darkness, I really started this project with the best of intentions, and it ended up firmly on the back burner. As such, what I do have is not at all in a usable state. Here’s what I’d need for a Spearhead:
- 1x Vampire Lord
- 3x Vargheists
- 5x Blood Knights
- 20x Deathrattle Skeletons

I’ve built most of the models, with some nice conversions for the Blood Knights:

The Vampire Lord would be an easy one to put together, and I actually have a model I’d like to convert for this. The Vargheists are more of an issue. I’d love to have a suitable conversion to add to my planned city-themed Soulblight, but I just don’t know what I’d use.
Maggotkin of Nurgle
The Maggotkin is probably my second favourite army after the Gloomspite Gitz, and I’m excited to see where they go in AOS4. To use them in Spearhead I’d need to be able to field the following units:
- 1x Spoilpox Scrivener
- 10x Plaguebearers of Nurgle
- 5x Putrid Blightkings
- 2x Pusgoyle Blightlords

Okay, I have most of this painted! Let’s take a look:

This seems very doable. All I’d need to put together is a Spoilpox Scrivener. I’d have to convert it, of course. Most of the Daemons in this army are converted with a Garden of Nurgle theme. There’s plenty I can do in that direction. I might try to get this done soon.
Flesh-Eater Courts
Okay, so the Flesh-Eaters have kind of started and stopped a lot. I was building it happily, but then paused as I waited for the new book. The dust settled on that and I paused again to wait for the new edition. I’ll get back to it, but what would I need to build a Spearhead force?
- 1x Abhorrant Archregent
- 1x Varghulf Courtier
- 3x Morbheg Knights
- 10x Cryptguard

Of course, almost none of my completed models are in there! Typical, innit? It’s only the Abhorrant Archregent that I’ve finished:

What of the rest of the box? Obviously, with my themed army, I won’t be picking up a box to build and paint. Instead, I’ll be printing up some foot knights and some pegasus knights to be the Crypt Guard and Morbheg Knights, respectively. As for the Varghulf… who knows? I’ll work something out, but this is one I definitely want to do once I’ve cleared my Old World slow-grow targets.
