Feck All on Friday: Properly Breaking Down My Painting Resolutions, 6 Months Into 2024

I’m travelling, and that means that I’m not going to try to format a 5 on Friday post on my phone! Right, we’re past the halfway point in the year. How are the painting resolutions going? I think they’re going better than my most recent roundup might have you believe! Let’s remind ourselves where we are, what’s been done, and what plans I might have.

Painting Resolutions, June 2024 Summary

  • Paint at least 4 Warhammer armies of approx 2000 points (June status: 0/4)
  • Paint an Underworlds Warband (June status: Complete! 1/1)
  • Paint two Malifaux crews (June status: 0/2)
  • Paint 2 starting forces each for 2 different games (June status: 1/4)
  • Take part in at least 4 club painting contests (June status: Complete! 4/4)
  • Paint 366 miniatures (June status: 229/366)
  • Paint more than I purchase or print (June status: on track!)

I think it’s easiest to take them one by one.

Paint at least 4 Warhammer armies of approx 2000 points (June status: 0/4)

On the surface, this resolution does not appear to be going well. In reality, it’s actually going very well. There are a few armies I am currently thinking are doable for this resolution.

First up, I’ve now got the Flesh-Eater Courts finished to over 2,000 points. Of course, I’m not done, and want to do some Crypt Horrors, Crypt Flayers, or Morbheg Knights. I want to main this army for a little while.

Next up, we’ve got the Skaven. I’ve been working heavily on them this year and I only actually need to finish 2 miniatures to finish up my goals for them. Namely, these are Thanquol and a Plague Furnace. I’ll be getting more Skaven when the new Skaventide box comes out, but I really want to finish up my planned force before starting on those.

The next army that seems achievable is my 6 C’Tan list for the Necrons. I’m picking away at this. I’ve finished the three named C’Tan shards and the first of my three generics. I also want to do a couple of Hexmark Destroyers. Once I’ve finished those, I’m happy to classify this is another army and mark it as complete.

Now, for another army, this is a bit out of left-field. I’m thinking I’m going to paint up another 2,000ish points of Sons of Behemat. I’ve got an unpainted Kraken Eater conversion that I could finish. I’m also thinking I’m going to do a Destruction beast-themed army. I’m going to rebase my Troggoth hag and my Colossal Squig to be Gargants, and finish up my Rogue idol and a Troggoth Gargant I printed last year. This sounds fun. I also did a bunch of Mancrushers earlier in the year.

Paint an Underworlds Warband (June status: Complete! 1/1)

This one is done! I might do an extra warband. I might not. Who knows?

Paint two Malifaux crews (June status: 0/2)

I thought I’d be further on with this one. I did make a start on my first new keyword, Bygones. I built and primed most of the models that fit into a Tiri crew.

I’ve since started putting down some skin tone on them, but haven’t progressed much further than that. I’ll get to it!

Paint 2 starting forces each for 2 different games (June status: 1/4)

I actually changed this one, slightly. I switched it from skirmish games to just games, more generally. The reason for this was that my attention was largely taken away from skirmish games and put onto The Old World. I’ve done a pair of starter armies for this game.

If anything, this was a lot more work than a pair of skirmish forces would have been. The July roundup will show this now at 3/4. I need to do a second Stargrave crew to bring that up to 4/4. That can wait until later in the year.

Take part in at least 4 club painting contests (June status: Complete! 4/4)

I’ve missed out on a couple of club painting contests, but have taken part in 4 so far this year! My results have been a lot worse than in previous years, though.

I’m looking forward to some of our planned contests later in the year.

Paint 366 miniatures (June status: 229/366)

We’re doing alright! This is one of the two overarching resolutions which the others kind of feed into. And we’re on track. It’s looking alright.

I don’t think I’ll match last year’s total of 510 miniatures, but then I never set out to. I don’t need to beat last year; I just need to be satisfied that I made good progress.

We’ll be adding a nice wee chunk to this total at the end of July, too!

Paint more than I purchase or print (June status: on track!)

Okay, so… I was doing well with this one. Then Games Workshop set a trap for me. It was a trap called Skaventide:

Yeah…

Honestly, I’m not that worried. Yes; I’ve bought more than I intended, but I’m still sitting on a net positive. I’ve had feedback that I should not be counting models that I’ve printed towards my totals, but I disagree. The point is less about money and more about not adding to an endless pile of shame.

So, aye, on track but not as far ahead as I’d like.
