So, how did August go?
Painting
It’s been a quiet month! There hasn’t been a whole lot of painting, and the only things I’ve managed to finish are a few terrain pieces for Spearhead that came in the new Age of Sigmar starter set:

For the quick turnaround in getting these ready for a club event, I am delighted with them. They look really good!
So, then, that gives us 4 painted miniatures for this month. There were no miniatures printed this month, though I have planned some printing which will likely happen next month. I did buy another 8 minis, though. This means that our totals for this month are:
Bought: 8 minis
Printed: 0 minis
Painted: 4 minis
This is not really the balance we want to see! We added more miniatures that we completed. That needs to be rectified in September.
This means that my totals for the year so far are:
Purchased: 121 minis
Printed: 115 minis
Painted: 277 minis
The next things to be finished will hopefully be my FEC Spearhead and some Malifaux miniatures. I’m also looking to the last of my C’Tan. We’ll see what makes it onto the painting table first.
Gaming
August has seen a fair amount of gaming, but not very varied gaming. We had a club event for Age of Sigmar: Spearhead that went really well. I’m really happy with how that system works; it’s smooth, feels proportionate… it just works. It’s a great format.

Here’s the list of games that I had played already this year, before the start of August:
- Century: Golem Edition
- Architects of the West Kingdom
- Sushi Go!
- Warhammer Underworlds
- Age of Sigmar: Soulbound
- Traveller
- Dungeons & Dragons
- Santorini
- King of Tokyo
- Ticket to Ride
- Twilight Struggle
- Warhammer: Age of Sigmar
- Ark Nova
- Arcane Academy
- Robot Quest Arena
- UNO
- Root
- Apiary
- Dixit
- In the Hall of the Mountain King
- Quadropolis
- 1960: The Making of the President
- Everdell
- Age of Fantasy
- Call of Cthulhu
- Raiders of the North Sea
- Scout
- Warhammer 40,000
- Kluster
- Rummy
- Lorcana
- Flotsam Fight
- Twilight Struggle Red Sea: Conflict in the Horn of Africa
I added the original Twilight Struggle into the list above, as I had forgotten to add it a couple of months back. I’ve also added three more game to the played list in August:
- Magic: the Gathering
- Eclipse
Other than playing Age of Sigmar 4th edition (I’m not counting that as a new game) and a whole bunch of Everdell, Magic was the real biggie this month. Man, I’ve fallen hard for that. I’ve hard cards for a long time, so I’m counting that as a game I have had without playing, though most of what I am playing with are new cards. There’s going to be more Magic coverage on the blog going forward, with a particular focus on our group’s preferred format; Commander.
Right near the end of the month, on Thursday, I also got a game of Eclipse. I’ve had it on my shelf for a while, but someone at club had their copy in and wanted a game, so I jumped in. I had a good time. I made a lot of threats, spent a lot of time being a coward, and ended up somehow winning. I mostly shied away from confrontation and tried to build up lots of territory, which fit in well with my faction scoring condition. Good times!
Next month is going to see a lot more Magic getting played. I’m definitely playing on Thursday. There’s been some talk Arcs as well. My copy is still on preorder, but one of our group has had their Kickstarter pledge delivered. I’m also keeping an eye on the GMT sale which is due to start this week.
Writing
I’ve managed to maintain my goal of posting a blog post per day. I’m happy to be doing well on that front. Reviews are going very well, too. I’ve loved doing book reviews, and some more board game reviews. Some highlights from this month’s blog content are:
- A review of Pedro Domingos’ novel, 2040
- Some thoughts on music in RPGs
- A review of the novel, Murder on the Interstellar Express, by Gregory D. Little
- A review of the RPG, Slav Borg
- A review of the board game, Scythe
- My first games of Commander
- A review of the board game, New York Zoo
- Looking at some MTG commanders
- A review of the card game, Paperback
- Our first Magic Monday post
- August’s Game of the Month
I’ve got a couple of books lined up for reviews; one of which I’ve been very excited to read. I want to keep Magic Monday going for a while, with our next one coming tomorrow.
No progress on the DTRPG stuff. This feels like a write-off at this point…
