One interesting card type from Ravensburger’s Disney-themed trading card game, Lorcana, is the location card. These cards are placed on the battlefield and remain in play, providing ongoing benefits or triggering specific actions based on their descriptions.

When a location card is played, it is placed on the field and typically remains active until it is removed by an opposing card effect or ability. The impact of a location card can range from providing buffs to your characters, generating resources, or even affecting the overall gameplay mechanics. Here are some common effects:

Resource Generation: Some location cards generate additional resources, allowing players to generate lore, ink, or card draw. Motunui Island Paradise is a cool example of this type of card, turning banished characters into ink to keep your engine chugging away.

Buffs and Debuffs: Locations can provide buffs to your characters, such as increased attack or defense, or impose debuffs on your opponent’s characters, hindering their abilities. A good example of this is Fang River City which provides really good protections to characters located there.

Special Abilities: Certain location cards grant unique abilities that can be activated under specific conditions, providing strategic advantages that can turn the tide of a game. I’m thinking of cards like The Wall Border Fortress which, once you have met the condition of having an exerted character at the location, protect all of your other locations from being attacked. This is an absolute staple for any steel-based, location-heavy deck.

So, now that we know what location cards do, should we include a few in our decks? Including location cards in your deck adds a layer of strategic depth to your gameplay. These cards can create synergies with your other cards, enabling you to devise complex strategies and outmaneuver your opponent.

Resource Management: Efficient resource management is crucial in Lorcana. Location cards that generate resources can help you maintain a steady flow of action points, ensuring you always have the means to execute your plans. A good example of this is Merlin’s Cottage, which lets players play cards from the top of their deck, opening up more playable cards each turn.

Board Control: Location cards can help you control the board by providing continuous benefits or disrupting your opponent’s strategies. This board control can create openings for you to launch decisive attacks or defend against powerful adversaries. I really like Ursula’s Garden, Full of the Unfortunate, as it really cuts down on the ability of your opponents to gain lore from questing. You’ve also got cards like Tropical Rainforest which force opponents into launching attacks rather than questing, leaving their characters vulnerable to being attacked in turn.

Versatility: With a diverse array of location cards available, you can tailor your deck to suit your playstyle. Whether you prefer aggressive tactics, defensive plays, or intricate combos, there’s a location card that complements your approach. These could be as simple as the cheap, lore-generating De Vil Manor, through to the defensive Rapunzel’s Tower, or the health-regaining Winter Camp, Medical Tent, or plenty more.

There are a ton of options, depending on the colour combination that you pick for your deck. My own decks, at the moment, probably underuse locations, and most of the ones I have are your basic lore generators. Branching out and incorporating location cards into my decks is an obvious next step. I might be good for you as well.
