As I’ve mentioned over the past few weeks, I enjoy fun cards. Alexander Clamilton from the Unsanctioned set is a perfect example of a fun, joyful card. This legendary creature brings a unique blend of strategy and fun to the game, making it a standout card for players who enjoy a bit of whimsy in their decks.

Alexander Clamilton is a legendary blue creature with a converted mana cost of 3. As a 0/4 Clamfolk Advisor Rebel, Alexander Clamilton has two main abilities that make him a versatile and entertaining card:
- Wordy Spell Synergy: Whenever you cast a wordy spell (a spell with four or more lines of rules text), you scry 2. This ability allows you to manipulate the top of your library, ensuring you draw the cards you need.
- Combat Trick: For a couple of mana and tapping Alexander Clamilton, you can choose a target creature you don’t control. Then, reveal the top card of your library. Alexander Clamilton gets +X/+0 until end of turn, where X is the number of lines of rules text on the revealed card. Alexander Clamilton then fights that creature.
Alexander Clamilton’s abilities open up several strategic possibilities:
- Library Manipulation: The scry ability is invaluable for setting up your draws. In decks that rely on specific combos or key cards, this can be a game-changer.
- Combat Control: The ability to boost Alexander Clamilton’s power and have him fight another creature can be used to take down threats or clear the way for your other creatures.
- Wordy Spells: Building a deck with a high density of wordy spells can maximize Alexander Clamilton’s scry ability. Cards with extensive rules text not only trigger his ability but also provide interesting interactions and effects.
Okay, so we’ve got some core strategies. What else do we need to think about when building around Alexander Clamilton?
- Deck Building: Focus on including spells with four or more lines of rules text to consistently trigger Alexander Clamilton’s scry ability. You could quite easily lean into this and ensure that everything except for your basic lands qualifies as wordy. Wordy lands won’t trigger the scrying ability (not being spell, innit?), but they do count towards the second ability with the flip of the top card of the deck.
- Timing: Use his fight ability strategically to remove key threats from your opponent’s board. Revealing a card with a high number of rules text lines can turn Alexander Clamilton into a formidable fighter.
- Synergy: Pair Alexander Clamilton with cards that benefit from scrying or revealing the top card of your library, such as Augury Owl or Future Sight, to enhance his effectiveness. Both of these cards also qualify as wordy, having at least 4 lines of text each.
- Legality: This is a silver-bordered card from the Unsanctioned set. It’s not legal for use in any format. You really need to talk to your group for approval before bringing him along. Don’t over-invest in a deck that you’re not going to be able to use.

Alexander Clamilton is more than just a humorous nod to a famous historical figure; he’s a versatile card that can fit into various deck archetypes. I’m also very convinced that he’d make an incredibly fun and funny commander, just so long as your group will allow you to use an “unsanctioned” card!
