Resolutions 2024: October Roundup

It’s one thing to set resolutions, and quite another to hold oneself to them.  I intend to review my progress monthly toward each of the resolutions.  Welcome, then, to our roundup for September 2024.  Let’s start with a reminder of the resolutions and where we got to in September

So, how did October go?

Painting

It’s been another quiet month. I managed just three miniatures. The first of them was my second puppet horseman:

He’s probably my favourite of the riders. I love the charcoal face, the glowing eyes, and the flames.

I then did my third puppet horseman:

I liked doing the dress on this one, and the blue flames on the fire.

Finally, I did my fourth puppet horseman:

I like the yellow and the wood on this mini, and the picture really doesn’t actually do it justice. That happens from time to time, where the camera just doesn’t pick things up well. I’m not delighted with the cage, though.

So, then, that gives us 3 painted miniatures for this month. There were no miniatures purchased this month, though I did print one. Our totals for the month are:

Bought: 0 minis
Printed: 0 minis
Painted: 3 minis

Not super productive, but at least the balance is in the right direction!

This means that my totals for the year so far are:

Purchased: 121 minis
Printed: 116 minis
Painted: 288 minis

I’m not sure what will be next. Things aren’t quite going so well with the painting at the moment, and it’s now very unlikely that I will hit my goal of a mini per day.

Gaming

October has seen a fair amount of gaming, including a few new games for me. The first new game of the month for me was Nucleum.

I’m not completely sure how I feel about Nucleum. It was a lot. It was heavy, and I do like heavy games. I think I didn’t understand the game quickly enough and I’d fare better if I played again. It was interesting though, and I liked how action selection worked. Yeah, mixed feelings on this one…

Here’s the list of games that I had played already this year, before the start of October:

  1. Century: Golem Edition
  2. Architects of the West Kingdom
  3. Sushi Go!
  4. Warhammer Underworlds
  5. Age of Sigmar: Soulbound
  6. Traveller
  7. Dungeons & Dragons
  8. Santorini
  9. King of Tokyo
  10. Ticket to Ride
  11. Twilight Struggle
  12. Warhammer: Age of Sigmar
  13. Ark Nova
  14. Arcane Academy
  15. Robot Quest Arena
  16. UNO
  17. Root
  18. Apiary
  19. Dixit
  20. In the Hall of the Mountain King
  21. Quadropolis
  22. 1960: The Making of the President
  23. Everdell
  24. Age of Fantasy
  25. Call of Cthulhu
  26. Raiders of the North Sea
  27. Scout
  28. Warhammer 40,000
  29. Kluster
  30. Rummy
  31. Lorcana
  32. Flotsam Fight
  33. Twilight Struggle Red Sea: Conflict in the Horn of Africa
  34. Magic: the Gathering (Commander)
  35. Eclipse
  36. Arcs

I added four new games to the list in October:

  1. Nucleum
  2. Villainous
  3. Isle of Skye
  4. Navoria

I got in a fair few games of Lorcana and Commander, and I continue to really love both of these games. It was great to finally try out Villainous, as it had been on my shelf for some time. I really enjoyed it, as the asymmetry is something that really appeals to me.

The final new game of the month for me was Navoria:

I enjoyed Navoria. It took me a little while to fully get it, particularly the building aspect, but there’s not a huge amount to grasp. I actually think that it lacks a little bit of bite, though it is very fun and rather pretty.

This month, I’ve crossed the finish line on all of my gaming resolutions.

My game of the month was Commander.

Writing

I’ve managed to maintain my goal of posting a blog post per day. I’m happy to be doing well on that front.  Reviews are going very well, too. I’ve loved doing book reviews in particular. Some highlights from this month’s blog content are:

I was very busy this month, and away for a chunk of it, so I’m delighted that I kept things going. I’m hoping for some more book reviews soon.

No progress on the DTRPG stuff. That’s not going to happen this year.
