Magic Monday: My Current Favourite Commanders (Nov 2024)

I’ve been enjoying Commander for some time now. It’s been fun getting back into Magic and getting a lot of games in. I’ve bought a few precons and started to work on putting together some decks of my own. Today, I want to look at my favourite four commanders that I currently use. I use others, like Frodo and Sam, but these are my favourites at the moment:

Zinnia, Valley’s Voice was my first commander from my first precon. I loved the art style of the Bloomburrow set, and I really liked the idea of an offspring-based deck. I gathered a bunch of cards to upgrade this deck, too. I actually gathered too many, and the deck is a wee bit of a mess at the moment. I’m planning to turn it into more of a blink-focused deck than just an offspring deck, so there are more changes a-comin’. As it stands, I love putting out a whole bunch of interesting creatures and using Zinnia to double them up.

Satya, Aetherflux Genius is a fun commander for my energy deck. I initially bought the Fallout Science! deck. It was underwhelming. Well, actually, it was just bad. I didn’t like it at all. It was slow, clunky, uninspiring. I ended up grabbing the Modern Horizons III energy deck, led by Satya, and mashed them together. Now, there are loads of cool artifacts, creatures, and spells in there. It’s far from perfect, of course, and I’d like to upgrade it further, but I love how the deck functions on a good day. Dr. Madison Li is a good alternative commander, and works in this deck way better than she did in her own one, but I prefer Satya for his menace and ability to create copies of other creatures when he attacks. Yeah, I need to do a little more work on this!

Aminatou, Veil Piercer is the commander of the Miracle Worker deck from Duskmourn. I’ve recently finished upgrading it, and shared some of my changes last week. I’ve made more, and there are more that I could make. For now, I am happy with the deck. It’s fun. It can hold its own. It has some interesting play. It’s also still viable without the commander out, which is always good. My favourite addition to this deck was probably Starfield of Nyx. It’s a total gamechanger!

Finally, my favourite commander at the moment is Grolnok, the Omnivore. I did a lot of reading and put this deck together to be a fun self-mill deck with a little more interaction than one would normally get from most precons. There’s a fun mix of older and newer cards, and it really leans into the distinctive playstyle that Grolnok facilitates; heavy on card advantage. I’ve had more fun with this deck than with any other, and there are a few different paths to victory. I love it! It’s got me raring to try to put together some more, similarly interesting decks.
