Resolutions 2025: January Roundup

It’s one thing to set resolutions, and quite another to hold oneself to them.  I intend to review my progress monthly toward each of the resolutions.  Welcome, then, to our roundup for January 2025.  Let’s start with a reminder of the resolutions:

Now, let’s take a look at what sort of progress was made in January

January Roundup: Painting

The pain continues and painting hasn’t been happening. I’m hoping to change that. Things are getting better, so maybe I can do a little tidy up and then settle to some painting for the first time in… too damn long.

That said, I’m still planning for things to be painted

I’ve picked up a fair amount of new Orruks that are gonna get painted up by someone else.

This makes the tally a bit tricky… I picked up the following sets:

  • 2x Wrekkamob boxes (54 minis)
  • 1x Arboy Big Boss (1 mini)
  • Zoggrok Anvilsmasha (2 minis)
  • Bossrokk Tower (1 mini)
  • Manifestations (4 minis)

So that’s 62 miniatures in all. The thing is, I’m not going to paint them, so do they fit into the “paint more than I purchase” thing? probably not. I certainly wouldn’t take credit. So let’s open two tallies:

Main Miniatures list

  • Purchased: 0
  • Painted: 0

Minis to be painted by others

  • Purchased: 62
  • Painted: 0

I’ll probably just close off the second tally once they’ve been painted.

January Roundup: Gaming

With Commander and Lorcana featuring more heavily in my rotation at the moment, and a goal to get more miniature games played, I’ve reduced this year’s target to 30 games. This month, I managed to play 7 different games to kickstart this year’s played list:

  1. Magic: the Gathering
  2. Disney Lorcana
  3. Warhammer: Age of Sigmar
  4. Apiary
  5. Architects of the West Kingdom
  6. 7 Wonders
  7. Terraforming Mars: Ares Expedition

It’s been a good month! Apiary was a big highlight of this month. It was a huge game for us in the first half of 2024, but we got burnt out on it. Writing a review of the expansion, Expanding the Hive, forced us to get back into it and fall right back in love with it. The updated that come with that expansion fix a lot of the problems that we had with the game.

Magic continues to be a major part of the rotation, and the day that this get published on the site is the day that I’ll be at a club Commander event.

January Roundup: Writing

with 7 reviews in January, we’re well on our way to our goal of 52 for the year. I tend to look at books, games, and others bits of media that grab my interest. Sometimes, I get sent things to review. Those items are marked in the list with an asterisk:

  1. The 1997 Royal Rumble, recently added to Netflix
  2. Marc Alan Edelheit’s novel, Off Midway Station*
  3. The MTG Commander precon, Lorehold Legacies
  4. James S. A. Corey’s novel, Mercy of Gods*
  5. The Apiary expansion, Expanding the Hive*
  6. The classic card game, Rummy
  7. Creator Spotlight on The Voyager’s Workshop

Good stuff!

Of course, there are many other posts that go up throughout the month. Some highlights from this month include:

Yeah, not a bad month. I’m hoping to get some more book and game reviews up, soon!
