Thoughts on Our Lorcana: Learn to Play Event

I previously wrote of a then-upcoming Lorcana event that we were hosting via our local club. I’d call the evening a modest success. In recent months, we’ve really struggled to fill the fill the room on a Tuesday night. Hell, we’re often struggling to fill a table. This week, we got a good turnout.

My wife and I went through the rules and supplied a bunch of starter decks for people to try out. We then circulated, either playing games or clarifying rules for those who were playing.

There was a pretty even split between those who already played Magic: the Gathering, and those who were entirely new to this type of card game. We actually got more rules queries from the Magic players than the new players, largely because they had assumptions about rules to overcome based on their knowledge of the more complex MTG rules.

It was such a positive evening, and I had a blast. My wife was quite nervous beforehand, as she doesn’t feel confident in explaining rules, but she did great. Everyone seemed to have a lot of fun.

I’m really happy that the evening went well. I feel that, as a club, we need to try to push more event-type evenings on Tuesdays to try and up our attendance. We need to save Tuesday club nights from just withering away, as they have been for a while. I’ll need to see what else I can offer, and support others with their own ideas.
