Sit down, we need to talk. Today, I’m going to explain to you why Spore Frog is the best card in Magic: the Gathering. Well… okay… fine… maybe not. But it’s certainly one of my favourite cards, and if you take a leap of faith it might become one of yours, too. Spore Frog may be small and unassuming, but this little amphibian represents and incredible value proposition that can turn the tide of a game in several different ways
Spore Frog is a 1/1 green creature with a simple yet powerful ability: “Sacrifice Spore Frog: Prevent all combat damage that would be dealt this turn.” This unassuming ability can make a world of difference, especially in the Commander format, where board states can get out of hand quickly.
Strategies and Synergies:
The primary strength of Spore Frog lies in its ability to prevent all combat damage for an entire turn. This can be a lifesaver when facing down a lethal attack, giving you the breathing room you need to mount a counterattack or stabilise your board. It’s like having a bankable Fog effect on a creature, which can be incredibly valuable in the right circumstances.
One of the best ways to maximise Spore Frog’s potential is through graveyard recursion. Cards like Sun Titan, Meren of Clan Nel Toth, and Eternal Witness can bring Spore Frog back from the graveyard, allowing you to use its ability repeatedly. This synergy can create a soft lock on combat damage, making it nearly impossible for your opponents to deal significant damage through combat. Actually, what I really love is not even letting him settle in the graveyard at all, instead relying on Broken Fall and Molting Skin to regenerate him, ensuring his availability whenever he’s needed.
In multiplayer formats like Commander, Spore Frog can also be a valuable political tool. By threatening to sacrifice Spore Frog, you can dissuade opponents from attacking you, potentially redirecting their aggression towards other players. You can also threaten to use, or actually use, Spore Frog to defend another player. This can buy you time and help you form temporary alliances to deal with larger threats.
One of the best things about Spore Frog is its affordability. It’s a budget-friendly card that can be easily included in many green decks without breaking the bank. Why I Love Spore Frog
Spore Frog’s versatility is one of the main reasons it’s my favorite card. It fits seamlessly into a variety of decks and strategies, whether you’re playing a graveyard-focused deck, a control deck, or even an aggressive deck that needs a bit of protection.

I just don’t understand why you’d field a deck without one if you have access to green cards.
