Following on from the success of our Budget Brew Commander Challenge, our local club is now running a second deck-building event. This time, it’s a random colour event, where each player is given a random colour combination and sent off to build a deck.
The rules are adapted from the ones I put together for our budget brew. Here they are:
Event Rules and Guidelines
Colour Challenge:
Each participant must build their Commander deck using the colour combination they have drawn from a wheel spin. Colours cannot be adapted/changed or traded. Each spun colour combination will be removed as they are drawn so there are no duplicates. This will only involve 1/2/3 colour combinations. You cannot use previously built decks or precons. This will be drawn live at club. If unable to attend, results will be posted on Discord.
Deck Construction:
Commander: Choose a Commander that fits within your colour(s) and gives you a theme and direction in which to build.
Card Pool: You can use any cards that are legal in Commander and there is no cost limit.
Deck Size: Standard Commander deck size is 100 cards, including the Commander(s). Decks must meet this standard.
Card Restrictions:
Banned Cards: The same standard ban list and restrictions that are in place for the Commander format.
Proxies: No proxies of any kind will be allowed.
Event Format:
Casual Club Play: Use the club Discord to arrange games with other club members who are taking part in the event. Share your results within the Trading Card Games channel.
List-sharing: Lists should be shared and decks completed by the 12th of September, 2025. You may use MtG Goldfish/Moxfield/Scryfall or any such deck builder.
Results: After the list deadline of Sept 12th, you have until December 12th (3 months) to play games with your color decks on club nights on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Play as many games as you like, but you will only score points for your first six games. It would be appreciated if you play beyond this initial set of 6 games to help others also reach six games.
Scoring: Points will be scored thusly:
- 1st place finish: +3P,
- 2nd place finish: +1P,
- 3rd place or lower: 0P,
- Removing a player: +1P,
- Alternative wincon: +1P (scored if at least two other players are still alive when a wincon resolves),
The winners will be awarded based on points totals. Admins will compile the results.

My Deck
After some deliberation over what commander to use, I have settled on Baylen, the Haymaker. I like tokens, and I can adapt the cards I buy to later on use them with Jetmir, or with Arabella.

I’m now working on putting a deck together. I’ll share some progress in a week or so, by which point I’d like to have a finished deck. I’ve got some definite cards that I’d like to use. I went with a token-heavy deck because I have some of the white and green token staples already, so I can capitalise on that strategy.
See you soon with the beginnings of a deck!
