December always brings a blizzard of “year in review” content. Spotify tells you what you’ve been looping, Reddit reminds you of your strangest obsessions, and YouTube floods you with “best of” montages. But my favourite roundup isn’t algorithmic at all; it’s live, satirical, and unapologetically British.
Every year, Private Eye magazine stages its Year in Review show, with editor Ian Hislop joined by a cast of comedians. For 2025, the lineup includes Harry Enfield, Jan Ravens, and Lewis Macleod, who took the stage at the Criterion Theatre in London. Together they tore through the year’s political pratfalls, media absurdities, and cultural oddities with sketches, impressions, and the kind of sharp satire that makes you laugh even as you wince.
What I love about this show is that it’s both a comedy night and a time capsule. You get the scandals, the headlines, the ridiculous quotes, all refracted through the Eye’s irreverent lens. It’s very UK-centric, of course, but even if you’re outside Britain, it’s a brilliant way to catch the flavour of the year: the mix of farce and fury that defined 2025.
If you’re curious, the revue ties into the Private Eye Annual 2025, and the Page 94 podcast. It’s one of those traditions that makes the end of the year feel complete: a reminder that satire is still one of the best ways to process the chaos.
