Magic Monday: Our Next Club Event; The Commander Typal Challenge

Following the success of our club’s recent Colour Challenge event, our club is moving into its next deck‑building adventure. This time, we’re diving into one of Commander’s most beloved archetypes: tribal (or typal) decks.

This event is all about identity, flavour, and creativity. Players will choose a creature type they want to represent, whether that’s a classic like Elves or Zombies, a fan‑favourite like Angels or Goblins, or something gloriously strange like Oozes, Advisors, or Horses. Build the tribe you love, the tribe you fear, or the tribe you’ve always wanted to try.

Typal Selection

Each participant chooses a creature type to build around.
Once a type is chosen, it is locked; no switching mid-event.
Lists will be tracked on Discord after the submission date so everyone can see what’s being used.
In some rare cases, an exception may be made for a non-creature typal deck. Please speak to an organiser before submitting your list.

Deck Construction

Commander: Your Commander may belong to your chosen creature type, but does not have to so long as you can demonstrate your theme clearly in the 99.
Card Pool: Any Commander‑legal cards are allowed.
Proxies: Proxies are not permitted for this event.
Deck Size: Standard 100‑card Commander deck, including your Commander(s).
Typal Requirement: At least 20 creatures in your deck must share your chosen creature type. They must be a majority of your creatures.

Event Format

Number of Games: Each participant should play six games.
Casual Club Play: Use the club Discord where possible to arrange games with other participants. Share your results in the thread, which will be added to the Trading Card Games channel.
List-Sharing: Decklists must be shared by 31st January, 2026. You may use Moxfield, Goldfish, Scryfall, or any deck builder of your choice.
Games Window: After the list deadline, you’ll have up to and including the club night of 30th April 2026 to play games with your typal deck during club nights.
- Play as many games as you like, but only your first six games will count for scoring.
- Extra games are encouraged to help others reach their six.

Scoring

1st place finish: +3p
2nd place finish: +1p
3rd place or lower finish: 0p
Removing a player: +1p
Alternative win condition: +1P (Awarded if at least two other players are still alive when the wincon resolves.)
