5 on Friday 23/01/26

It’s Friday, and here on No Rerolls that means it’s time for an all-new 5 on Friday. We’re going to start with 5 exciting releases for this week before moving on to our usual digest of some of our favourite articles from the past week. Of course, we’re slow readers, so don’t be surprised if there are some articles that are a little older – these are just some of the great articles we happen to have actually read in the past week.

Releases & Previews

Every week there are many games, books, and miniatures released. This will probably be a mix of previews, preorders, and releases, and with release dates being the way they are in this industry, it’s always pretty approximate. Excuses out of the way, here are 5 of the releases that caught our attention this week:

Games Workshop releases a new Nightbringer miniature for the Necrons – The new C’tan Shard of the Nightbringer is a towering reinvention of the classic 2002 sculpt; a swirling, scythe‑wielding Star God rising from a storm of scarabs, now scaled up to stand shoulder‑to‑shoulder with the Void Dragon. It’s a centrepiece model built to dominate both the table and the display shelf, dripping with that cold, cosmic menace only Aza’gorod can deliver.

As someone who already has a serious Necron host (and six C’tan, no less) this feels like an amazing upgrade. The new sculpt is wildly dynamic, full of environmental storytelling, and designed to be the kind of model that reshapes an army’s silhouette the moment it hits the table. A perfect excuse to wake the tomb world again?

Modiphius releases The 23rd Century Campaign Guide for the second edition of Star Trek Adventures – Modiphius’ new 23rd Century Campaign Guide kicks off Star Trek’s 60th‑anniversary celebrations with a deep dive into the era of Kirk, Spock, Pike, and the early Federation. It’s a full hardcover sourcebook for Star Trek Adventures 2e, charting everything from the century’s formative decades to the rising tensions with the Klingon Empire.

Packed with player guidance, GM tools, era‑specific themes, and campaign frameworks, this guide is built to help you run stories anywhere in the 23rd century, from frontier exploration to wartime drama. As an early title for the new edition, it feels like a statement of intent: a return to the roots of Trek with modern structure, clarity, and a whole galaxy’s worth of story hooks.

CMYK to release updated edition of Magical Athlete – CMYK’s re‑release of Magical Athlete revives the cult Japanese racing game of absurd fantasy figures, now updated with fresh design input from Richard Garfield, best known as the creator of Magic: The Gathering.

This new edition pairs Garfield’s refined gameplay tweaks with vibrant new artwork from Angela Kirkwood, giving the chaotic races of bananas, babies, and mythic heroes a bold, kinetic energy. With CMYK’s production polish, the re‑release promises to transform a quirky classic into a modern party game that’s as unpredictable and hilarious as ever.

DistoStudio releases Daydream – Daydream is a cosy, clever roll‑and‑write from DistoStudio where you fill shifting cloud‑grids with dice results, trying to build perfect lines of unique or consecutive numbers while your little fold‑out board transforms into new scenes around you.

It’s light, tactile, and looks to be quietly satisfying; a 1–5 player game that plays in 15–30 minutes, all about making smart choices in a relaxing, modular space. The kind of breezy, portable puzzle that feels perfect for a tea break, a train ride, or a gentle reset between heavier games.

Atomic Mass releases Inhumans Affiliation Pack for Marvel Crisis Protocol – The Inhumans Affiliation Pack brings four core members of the Royal Family back into circulation. It includes Black Bolt, Medusa, Crystal, and Lockjaw.

You get the full suite of minis, character cards, and five Inhumans‑focused Team Tactics Cards, making this a tidy, cost‑effective way to field the Affiliation. The sculpts and rules remain identical to the originals, but the convenience (and the synergy baked into the pack) makes it an easy pickup for expanding a Crisis Protocol collection.

Blog Posts & Articles

The meat of 5 on Friday, the articles are listed in no particular order, so let’s get into some recommendations:

Stormcast Eternals: Story Mode @ Woehammer This is a smart little narrative engine that sits perfectly between one‑off battles and full campaign bloat. It’s a browser‑based tool that generates your general, frames each game with evolving story prompts, and reacts to your wins and losses with branching outcomes, interludes, and shifting reputation. It’s low‑admin, flexible, and built to give Stormcast players a sense of continuity without demanding a whole campaign group, making narrative play feel alive even when games are sporadic. I’m looking forward to seeing this project expand.

The Nocturnal Chronicles of Pendragon@ Refereeing and Reflection A well‑researched look at Chaosium’s new Pendragon “lore” hardcovers. This piece traces how Malory’s Le Morte d’Arthur and Karr’s Arthurian Companion moved from Stewart Wieck’s unfinished Nocturnal Media Kickstarter into Chaosium’s hands, and how the new regime shepherded the long‑delayed project to completion. It’s part publishing history, part industry archaeology, and part appreciation for two beautifully produced reference works.

Weekly Commander: Bre of Clan Stoutarm @ J.M. Casual Blog Now, this is an interesting card. It’s one that I’d already ordered when I saw this post, as I’m keen to see what I can do with it in putting together a fun, little lifegain deck. I don’t think it’ll be top tier, but it has the potential to be a lot of fun. I don’t agree with all of the picks listed in this post, and I might not go in quite the same direction, but there are some useful suggestions.

Quarter 3 Week 5 Update: Down with Banners @ Hammer the Backlog These are classic miniatures with classic paintjobs. Fantastic. It’s great to see these miniatures given some love whilst maintaining their original feel.

Creating Stunning Miniature Pillars for Tabletop Games @ Tabletop Thoughts Fun post. Cool pillars, some nice commentary on process, and some positive reflection at the end about the power of just small, incremental progress to get through projects. Definitely advice worth heeding!
