5 on Friday 10/04/26

It’s Friday, and here on No Rerolls that means it’s time for an all-new 5 on Friday. We’re going to start with 5 exciting releases for this week before moving on to our usual digest of some of our favourite articles from the past week. Of course, we’re slow readers, so don’t be surprised if there are some articles that are a little older – these are just some of the great articles we happen to have actually read in the past week.

Releases & Previews

Every week there are many games, books, and miniatures released. This will probably be a mix of previews, preorders, and releases, and with release dates being the way they are in this industry, it’s always pretty approximate. Excuses out of the way, here are 5 of the releases that caught our attention this week:

Games Workshop to release a new Defiler miniature for Warhammer 40,000 – The Defiler, originally released in 2004, was a fantastic mini when it was released. It was big, brutal, beautiful. It’s not aged well, though. By today’s standards, it looked smaller and spindlier. It was angular and lacked the brutality of more recent Daemon Engines. It’s great, therefore, to see the Defiler getting an update:

This new mini is brutal. It actually feels like a lot like the Soul Grinder, with the more defined Daemon Flesh in there. I notice that it immediately sold out on the GW website, and I’m really not surprised by that at all. I’m very tempted by an Iron Warriors army, and this chap would be a great addition…

Dragon Shield to release pink, sparkly card sleeves! – Sparkle, sparkle!

They’re sparkly card sleeves. I want some.

Archon Studio is taking preorders for their new Starcraft miniatures game – The Founders Edition two player starter set drops you straight into the Terran-Zerg war with premium components, exclusive early extras, and everything you need to hit the table fast. It’s a sleek, limited‑run launch box that showcases Archon’s sculpting and gives players a head start in the fight for the Koprulu sector.

Built as the definitive on‑ramp for the new StarCraft minis game, this set pairs two fully playable forces with terrain, rules, and founder‑only bonuses — a collector‑grade starter that doubles as a competitive core for anyone ready to command, swarm, or bunker down from day one.

Renegade Game Studios releases a new Succubus Club sourcebook for Vampire: The Masquerade – Chicago has always felt like the default setting for Vampire: The Masquerade. That setting has been so well-developed during each edition of the game. The Succubus Club is a beloved fixture of that setting, and it’s great to see it explored again in this latest edition:

With an explicit focus on music, this seems to take a slightly different approach to the club as opposed to previous supplements. In addition to this new focus, with its scenarios and band creation, you’ve got a bunch of new content, including merits, flaws, discipline powers, NPCs, and more. I’m very keen to flip through this book!

Modiphius is taking preorders for a new, Battle for Boston-themed starter set for Fallout Factions – The upcoming Battle for Boston boxed set pushes Fallout Factions into full urban‑warfare mode, framing the Commonwealth as a tight, contested battleground where faction identity actually matters: Brotherhood discipline, Minutemen improvisation, and Institute precision all colliding across ruined streets and half‑collapsed landmarks. It feels like a snapshot of the setting at its most volatile.

New sculpts, streamlined force‑building, and a scenario arc built around control of the city make this a clean on‑ramp for new players and a sharp thematic hook for veterans. It seems to be a boxed set that understands Boston is more than just a backdrop; it’s the fight.

Blog Posts & Articles

The meat of 5 on Friday, the articles are listed in no particular order, so let’s get into some recommendations:

BGG Top Games – 2401-2500 @ Dude! Take Your Turn! I’ve enjoyed this series of posts. I might nick it at some point. Imitation is flattery, innit? The thing that caught my attention in this post was the author’s view on the “adult” version of Codenames. Go read it, knowing that I completely agree with his take on it.

Star Wars Legion: Fully Painted and Operational @ Spalanz These look great! I just can’t take the plunge on Legion because it’s not played here, but posts like this, with such beautifully-painted miniatures, make me re-evaluate that decision…

Rogue Star – Andy Hoare @ Wordaholic Anonymous A warm, enthusiastic dive into Rogue Star, this review captures exactly why early Black Library novels still hook readers: the sheer allure of Rogue Trader lore, the dynastic scheming, and the messy, high‑stakes politics of the Damocles Gulf. It’s less about character depth and more about worldbuilding, space battles, and the thrill of seeing how these threads echo through later 40K fiction. That sense of rediscovery makes the whole piece a pleasure to read.

From the painting desk #82 – Colonial…mercs? @ Dawn of the Lead A simple, earthy paint scheme that just looks fantastic. I wasn’t familiar with these minis, but what a great job!

Shadow of the Horned Rat: Black’s Avengers @ Woehammer Aside from the miniatures looking great in their themed colour scheme, it’s cool to see someone as an adult fulfil those little goals that they wanted to hit as kids. The nostalgia is strong in this post.
