Magic Monday: Changing the Game with Deflecting Swat

Let’s look at some game changers! I’ve got some mixed feelings about WotC’s definition of these powerful cards. They’re staples of the format, and they’re undeniably powerful, but the Game Changer categorisation has the potential to stigmatise their use.

Or does it?

It may well be the case for some groups that by identifying and admitting the power of these cards and defining how many one can include in a deck of a specific tier, it actually gives tacit permission for their use. Go figure.

Whichever way you see it, it’s worth knowing what these cards do. Today, let’s look at Deflecting Swat!

In a format where interaction is everything, Deflecting Swat has carved out a reputation as one of the most powerful red spells in Commander. Introduced in Commander 2020 as part of a cycle of free spells, it quickly became a staple; not just for its utility, but for the way it reshapes the flow of the game.

So, Deflecting Swat has been identified as a strong card, but what does it actually do? At three mana, it’s already a solid red redirect. But the fun really begins when you control your commander – which is pretty often in EDH – and it becomes free. That’s where the magic happens.

Sounds good, but the question then becomes, why is Deflecting Swat a Game-Changer? Well, there are a few factors that make it a very strong card:

  1. Free Interaction: In a format where mana efficiency is king, casting a spell for zero mana is a massive tempo swing.
  2. Protects Your Board: Redirect a Swords to Plowshares, Cyclonic Rift, or Counterspell aimed at your win condition.
  3. Turns the Tables: Swat doesn’t just protect; it punishes. Redirecting an Aggravate, Alabaster Potion, or any number of other spells can flip the game.
  4. Surprise Factor: Because it costs nothing, it’s easy to hold up without telegraphing via untapped mana. Opponents often walk into it unprepared.

These are all solid strengths, and the card is undeniably useful. It will find a welcoming home in just about any deck with a red component. It will fit particularly well in a few specific places:

  • Aggressive Commanders: Like Krenko, Mob Boss or Najeela, the Blade-Blossom, who want to protect their board while pushing tempo.
  • Combo Decks: That need to protect a key piece at the right moment.
  • Politics-Heavy Decks: Where redirecting a spell can shift alliances or sow chaos.

Great, but is any card really perfect? Of course not. That said, I can’t really think of many downsides. Only two really come to mind at the moment:

  • It’s Pricey: As of now, Deflecting Swat commands a high price tag due to its power and limited printings.
  • It’s Colour-Locked: Only red decks can run it, and it’s most effective in decks that can reliably keep their commander on board.

Look, what it ultimately comes down to is that Deflecting Swat is more than just a flashy trick; it’s a strategic powerhouse that rewards timing, foresight, and clever play. Whether you’re protecting your combo, redirecting a game-ending spell, or just keeping your opponents guessing, it’s a card that can change the outcome of a game in a single instant. That’s what we’re looking for in any card that can reasonably be called a game-changer.
