Let’s look at some game changers! I’ve got some mixed feelings about WotC’s definition of these powerful cards. They’re staples of the format, and they’re undeniably powerful, but the Game Changer categorisation has the potential to stigmatise their use.
Or does it?
It may well be the case for some groups that by identifying and admitting the power of these cards and defining how many one can include in a deck of a specific tier, it actually gives tacit permission for their use. Go figure.
Whichever way you see it, it’s worth knowing what these cards do. Today, let’s look at Vampiric Tutor!

In a game where timing and precision can mean everything, Vampiric Tutor stands as a paragon of efficiency. First printed in Visions and later reprinted in Commander Legends and Dominaria Remastered, this one-mana instant has shaped formats from Commander to Vintage. It’s not just a tutor; it’s a strategic scalpel, letting you carve out the perfect play at the perfect moment.
So, for the cost of a single black mana (and, as we will see, 2 life) what does this card actually do?
Search your library for a card, then shuffle your library and put that card on top of it. You lose 2 life.
That’s it. No restrictions on card type, no timing limitations, just pure, unfiltered access to your deck’s best answer or win condition.
Sounds good! Why is it considered so powerful as to be on the game changer list, though? Well, there are a few possible reasons:
- Instant Speed: Cast it in response to a threat, before your draw step, or mid-combo; its flexibility is unmatched.
- Combo Enabler: Whether you’re assembling Thassa’s Oracle and Demonic Consultation, or setting up Ad Nauseam, Vampiric Tutor is often the first domino.
- Synergy with Draw Effects: Cards like Sensei’s Divining Top, Temple Bell, Brainstorm, or any number of other draw effects let you access the tutored card immediately, bypassing the top-deck delay.

It should be noted that there is one, slight drawback. Unlike Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor doesn’t put the card into your hand. You lose 2 life and wait a turn unless you have a draw effect ready. But in Commander, where life totals are high and draw engines are common, this cost is often negligible.
Really, Vampiric Tutor has a home in just about any deck with a black component. However, it is most useful in specific build types:
- Combo Decks: Where precision and timing are everything.
- Control Decks: To find the exact answer when the board state demands it.
- Toolbox Builds: That rely on silver bullets and situational cards.

Vampiric Tutor is a game-changer not because it’s flashy, but because it’s quietly perfect. It doesn’t win the game on its own, but it finds the card that does. Whether you’re digging for a board wipe, a win condition, or a clutch counterspell, this tutor delivers with ruthless efficiency.
