5 on Friday 08/09/23

It’s Friday, and here on No Rerolls that means it’s time for an all-new 5 on Friday. We’re going to start with 5 exciting releases for this week before moving on to our usual digest of some of our favourite articles from the past week. Of course, we’re slow readers, so don’t be surprised if there are some articles that are a little older – these are just some of the great articles we happen to have actually read in the past week.

Releases & Previews

Every week there are many games, books, and miniatures released. This will probably be a mix of previews, preorders, and releases, and with release dates being the way they are in this industry, it’s always pretty approximate. Excuses out of the way, here are 5 of the releases that caught our attention this week:

Games Workshop releases Norn Emissary for the Tyranids – I liked the Tyranid range when they got massively revamped back in third edition. They felt so fresh, and new, and cool. Since then, as other armies have gotten some great glow ups, the Tyranids had fallen behind somewhat. Not. Any. More:

Many of the new models are really something to behold. My favourite is this chap. The Norn Emissary is gorgeous. He fits into the existing aesthetic, but drives it forward, representing a real jump in quality over what came before. I’m delighted that the sometimes-neglected Nid players are getting treats like this!

Free League releases They Grow Up So Fast, a supplement for Tales From The Loop –  Free League continues to pump out quality releases, including this latest supplement for their Tales From the Loop RPG:

The supplement contains four adventures which can also be strung together into a campaign that takes place over the course of a year. Each adventure will take place over the course of one of the seasons. It’s a nice structure for a game that has one foot in the everyday and another in the surreal. Nice supplement, with the usual top-notch Free League aesthetic.

Wyrd releases Forge a New Path set for Malifaux – I mentioned previously that I’m really enjoying Malifaux again and also that I’m quite interested in the Bygone keyword. Well, here’s more Bygone!

I love the mechanical minions of this keyword. In this box, I particularly like the mounted miniature, The First Light. I will be picking up some Bygone once I’ve made some progress on my Levi crew!

Osprey releases A War Transformed, an alt-WW1 wargame – I continue to really like all the cool, wee games from Osprey, even if I’ve not gotten to play many of them. One of their upcoming games that caught my attention is A War Transformed:

I’ve got a soft spot for alternative WW1 and WW2 fiction, so this should be pretty cool. It’s not going to be the auto-buy that The Doomed was, but I’ll be keen to see some writeups once it’s out.

NoRerolls (who that?) releases Mayhem in Maryhill, a Fiasco playset –  Yeah, yeah, I know. Shut up. I can self-promote, fam!

This is the new Fiasco playset I released. It was a lot of fun to put together and is about a show that I hold in very high regard. Good times!

Blog Posts & Articles

The meat of 5 on Friday, the articles are listed in no particular order, so let’s get into some recommendations:

Chaos Cultists @ Deathzap Some lovely conversions here, using the great Frostgrave Cultists kit with a Wargames Atlantic kit to make some cultists for 40K. In addition to the great minis, there’s a good potted history of the Chaos Cultist range in 40K.

Hit the YouTube @ Burn After Running I love Burn After Running, so I’m excited to see how this Youtube channel does. I’ll definitely be watching!

Werwolf: Insurgency in Occupied Germany, 1945-1948 from Legion Wargames – Opening Moves Strategy Articles – Soviets @ The Players’ Aid Another solid, lengthy, enticing post from The Players’ Aid. I hadn’t seen this game before, but reading this, it’s bloody tempting!

Marvel Crisis Protocol Terrain: Daily Bugle Newsstand@ Azazel’s Bitz Box Oh, this looks great! I love the terrain pieces from the Crisis Protocol box, and it’s great to see them painted up so nicely. it must feel especially good when you know it’s your last piece to finish, too!

Tzeentch Warriors @ The Lead Collector Old Chaos miniatures from Games Workshop are often bursting with personality. These definitely fit that bill, with each one having an individual, unique charm. The yellow looks great on them!
