5 on Friday 21/10/22

It’s Friday, and here on No Rerolls that means it’s time for an all-new 5 on Friday. We’re going to start with 5 exciting releases for this week before moving on to our usual digest of some of our favourite articles from the past week. Of course, we’re slow readers, so don’t be surprised if there are some articles that are a little older – these are just some of the great articles we happen to have actually read in the past week.

Releases & Previews

Every week there are many games and miniatures released. This will probably be a mix of previews, preorders, and releases, and with release dates being the way they are in this industry, it’s always pretty approximate. Excuses out of the way, here are 5 of the releases that caught our attention this week:

Forgeworld releases Glotl Stop, a Lizardmen star player for Blood Bowl – I like the groove that Forgeworld has going with Necromunda and Blood Bowl.  The core warband/team boxes are done as plastic Citadel miniatures, whilst individual resin models are released by Forgeworld to complement the main line.  It works well.  The latest offering in this vein is Glotl Stop, a Lizardman star player for Blood Bowl:

To be honest, it wasn’t the miniature that first grabbed my attention.  It was the name.  Glotl Stop, as in ‘glottal stop’.  As a teacher of language, and as a Scot, the glottal stop is an interesting little linguistic quirk that features quite heavily in my own speech, and in that of most people that I know.

It’s a cool reference.  Well, for a given value of cool, I suppose…

Oh, and the model is nice.  It’s really nice, actually.  I love an ornate Lizardman.

FlipDie Dice Coin Sets up on Kickstarter – A unique set of dice, the FlipDie project on Kickstarter grabbed my attention this week.  You can read my full thoughts in this week’s Kickstarter-Watch article.  For today, suffice it to say that I am thoroughly impressed with the aesthetic of this project, and with the execution of this cool, quirky idea.

These dice take the form of hollow coins.  Inside, is a small, coloured ball and some channels for it to roll down into a space along the edge with a slight opening in it.  You can read my full thoughts on this project in this week’s Kickstarter-Watch!

Magpie Games taking preorders for Avatar Legends on DriveThruRPG – Avatar is a cartoon that totally passed me by.  I know it has a really dedicated following who evangelise for the show.  Now, it seems, there’s an RPG for them to play as well:

beyond the theme, and confirmation that this game uses the Apocalypse World system, the DTRPG page is somewhat sparse.  At least we know it’s a pretty solid system under the hood, I suppose.  I’m keen to see some reviews once it comes out next week.  Is the show worth watching?  Anyone out there given it a good go?

Q Workshop releases cat-themed dice set – There’s not a huge amount to say on this one. It’s a dice set. It’s themed around cats:

I will say that unlike many of Q Workshop’s dice sets, this one is pretty legible. I know some people who would immediately pick these up based on the theme. Myself, I do like the colour.

Asmodee to release Seafarers and Cities and Knights expansions for 3D Catan – Some time ago, Asmodee released a new, 3D edition of Catan.  It looked alright.  It was Catan.  It featured 3D terrain tiles.  It did what it was meant to do.  It was also prohibitively expensive.  Now, they have also released a pair of expansions packaged into another hugely expensive box:

Cities and Knights is a decent expansion and Seafarers is actually really good.  If you like Catan and want to expand your game, these are really solid expansions… but the price is once again ridiculous.  The RRP appears to be around the £400 mark.  Insanity.

Blog Posts & Articles

The meat of 5 on Friday, the articles are listed in no particular order, so let’s get into some recommendations:

Finished Red Harvest Terrain @ A Loft Full of Lead  I do enjoy me some Warcry, and the terrain in the boxed sets is always so good.  It’s cool to see sets gettting painted up.  Thanks for sharing!

Hobby Resolutions September 2022 Update @ Sprues & Brews I enjoy reading people’s resolutions, and I find it reassuring when folk aren’t totally up to date with them.  I’ve accepted that a couple of my own goals for this year won’t be met.  That’s okay though.  it’s fine.  The author of this post did some cool stuff this month, though.  Good job on the Krondspine and Tzeentch in particular.

Sons of Behemat: Building Competitive Lists @ Plastic Craic – I picked up my own copy of the new Sons of Behemat book earlier this week on a visit to Common Ground Games. I was delighted yesterday to see this post from Plastic Craic that really digs into the book and looks at some good combinations and lists. My takeaway from this article is that I will likely pick up Brodd at some point, and maybe Mancrushers are worth another look. I have 4 at the moment, but the reduced points cost is making them a lot more viable. I’m not sure I’d run a list of 10, though!

Commission: Rasputina @ SkitsMix Commissions This is just an amazing paintjob.  Rasputina is one of my favourite masters from Malifaux.  I had her model in first edition, actually painted her second edition model, and hadn’t really looked at her third edition one until now.  I really love the white furs on this force and the simple but effective bases.  Gorgeous!

Thanquol and Boneripper @ Lair of the Lagopmorph First and foremost, the green sword on Thanquol looks great.  I really like the newer (much bigger) Thanquol miniature, but there’s definitely something to be said for the older Thanquol and Boneripper duo.  Absolute classics that are very much done justice by this painter.

It’s been a good week on NoRerolls, where I’ve managed to maintain updates despite being away on holiday! Since my last 5 on Friday, I’ve published the following posts:

In the coming week, I’ll be sharing some completed miniatures (first since August!) and possibly a post about where I am with my 40K armies.

Catch ya’ll next week!
