5 on Friday 04/11/22

It’s Friday, and here on No Rerolls that means it’s time for an all-new 5 on Friday. We’re going to start with 5 exciting releases for this week before moving on to our usual digest of some of our favourite articles from the past week. Of course, we’re slow readers, so don’t be surprised if there are some articles that are a little older – these are just some of the great articles we happen to have actually read in the past week.

Releases & Previews

Every week there are many games and miniatures released. This will probably be a mix of previews, preorders, and releases, and with release dates being the way they are in this industry, it’s always pretty approximate. Excuses out of the way, here are 5 of the releases that caught our attention this week:

Games Workshop releases a Combat Patrol box for the Leagues of Votann – The Leagues of Votann are such a cool release for Warhammer 40,000. It’s not been free of controversy, of course, but the miniatures are lovely. I’ve written recently about my intention to do a Votann army. Of course, one cost-effective way to start on such a project is the Combat Patrol box:

This is a very nice box, and I will definitely be picking one up. The core unit of warriors gives me my third Troops unit towards filling a battalion detachment.  The bikes, although not necessarily my favourite unit ruleswise, are some of the nicest miniatures in the range. The Kahl is nice, but I do already have one. Finally, the Berserks are another of my favourite units model-wise, and one that I definitely want in my army. I’m not starting on this project right away, so this isn’t an immediate purchase for me, but it’s one I’ll definitely pick up in the new year.

Mystic Realms run Kickstarter Campaign for their Act 5 3D printable terrain – I went through a phase of being really into 3D printable terrain. There are so many fantastic creators out there, releasing set after set of truly stunning pieces. Mystic Realms have knocked it out of the park with this one:

Gorgeous set. I’m really impressed. just bear in mind, at the time of writing, you only have a couple of days to back the project! I also wrote about the project earlier this week.

Modiphius releases their Homeworld RPG – Modiphius! Gotta love ’em. This latest game is based on the hit video game series that sees you take control of a large mothership and its associated fleet. The RPG explores the community within the Mothership for the first time, really opening up the setting in new and (hopefully) interesting ways:

The game is based on Modiphius’ well-established 2D20 system. Most of the games that Modiphius develops (rather than those that they just publish) use this system. There are rather a lot of 2D20 games at this point. I’ve got two of them myself (Infinity and Achtung! Cthulhu), but have yet to actually get either to the tabletop.

Free League launches Kickstarter campaign for Zone Wars, their Mutant Year Zero-based miniature skirmish game – Free League are fantastic. They’re one of my favourite publishers. I’ve got several of their games now and I really love them, especially Mutant: Year Zero. It’s cool to see them branching out with the property. I also rather like miniatures games, so this might be a good proposition for me.

I’ve had a brief look at the campaign, but I think I’m going to have a proper look over the weekend and feature it in a Kickstarter-Watch next week. We’ll see how the game looks at that point.

Johan Nohr releases his CY_BORG RPG – Rather unsurprisingly given the name, CY_BORG is based on the hit, punky, apocalyptic RPG, MÖRK BORG. Not only is it based on MÖRK BORG, but it’s also compatible with it, letting you mix and match addons, resources, and the like.

As with MÖRK BORG, I love the rough art style of this game. With the gorgeous artwork, the punky, irreverent tone, and the rules-light nature of the game this ticks a lot of boxes for me. I need to get MÖRK BORG to the table to really see if I like it before I start exploring these spin-offs and whatnot.

Blog Posts & Articles

The meat of 5 on Friday, the articles are listed in no particular order, so let’s get into some recommendations:

Painted Acolyte Iconward @ The Bovine Overlord  I love the vibrance of this miniature. I think that if and when I get around to ever doing my Genestealer Cults army, I’ll likely start with an Iconward. I’ve managed to gather so damn many of them!  The purple and yellow on this mini look great. Thanks for sharing!

Dark City: my first Night Cafe creation @ Scent of a Gamer I’m pretty interested in AI art. Other people seem to get sch good results from it. I just don’t seem to get such good pieces from it. Maybe my prompts just aren’t right. I’ll need to keep at it. The pieces in this post are just stunning.

Leagues of Votann Unboxing and Review – 2nd Wave @ Sprues & Brews – This is a really in-depth look at the new Leagues of Votann range. I’m excited for this release, and will be doing Votann once I’ve cleared a project or three from the current slate (Squigs are done; Maggotkin expansion next) to make room. This review particularly highlights the character models, and has me really hyped for them. I’m even getting more used to 40K at the moment, so the timing is good.

Warhammer Underworlds: Gnarlwood – Return to Form @ The Unrelenting Brush A good review of the new Warhammer Underworlds set. I want to like Underworlds, but I’ve just not had enough of an opportunity to get into it. I was saying the same about Warcry until last month though, so there’s still hope! This review makes me really hopeful for this game. I’ve got a club event coming up for it, so I’m hoping that this latest edition lives up to the hype. If this author is correct, it just might.

Cold Up North – The Ribble Rumble @ TT Gaming I do enjoy a good event report, even if it’s for a game that I don’t actually play. This is a fantastic writeup of a Kings of War event, with lots of detail and a ton of cool pictures. It makes for a great read!

It’s been a good week on NoRerolls, where I’ve actually painted some minis! Go figure. Since my last 5 on Friday, I’ve published the following posts:

In the coming week, I’m going to share some finished miniatures. Well, at the time of writing, it’s a finished miniature. I’ll be trying to increase that count somewhat.

Catch ya’ll next week!
