Throwback Thursday: In ur Dungeons, Killin’ Ur Dudes

Dungeons crawls! I love me some dungeon crawls. One of my first hobbyist board games was actually a dungeon crawl, based on 2nd edition Dungeons & Dragons. It was the venerable title, Dragon Quest, put out by TSR in the early 90s.

In all honesty, my friends and I did not entirely understand the rules at first and we found ourselves largely making up our own rules for a long time. We really loved it, though. Hours and hours of fun were had as we moved our dudes around the map, kicking open doors and beating down the monsters. Glorin was my go-to character.

Clearly, the experience has stuck with me because I still love Dungeon Crawl games. I wrote about one in this week’s installment of this year’s top 50 games. I have lots of them behind me on my shelves.

The next dungeon crawl I picked up after Dragon Quest was a far simpler one, in the form of HeroQuest. That lasted me a while. Since then, I’ve picked up more. Fantasy ones include Super Dungeon Explore and Descent. In April of 2016 I shared my thoughts on the genre:

A couple of days later, I expanded on these thoughts by sharing my thoughts on sci-fi dungeon crawls. The first of these I played was Space Hulk, and I branched out from there, trying others:

Now, I’ve got a few more to try. I love the Warhammer Quest series, including Blackstone Fortress and Cursed City. I also have had a copy of Gloomhaven sitting for quite some time, but haven’t yet gotten around to playing it. One for this year?
