Every month, I play some really fantastic games. It’s nice, from time to time, to reflect on these games and really think about why I love them. With that in mind, here’s the first of my Game of the Month posts. The only real prerequisite for this most prestigious of titles is that it is a game of some sort and that I have played it in the past month. A game may well find itself winning this award more than once in the same year. That’s fine. It’s all about love, y’know?
Without further ado, let’s see what game has won this month’s title:
Star Wars: Rebellion

A perennial high-scorer on my annual Top 50 list, it should come as no surprise that I adore this game. It’s Star Wars in a box, after all! Like Scythe, this is a game that looks like a wargame, but you won’t necessarily win by just throwing ships and troops around – at least not as the Rebels. This is a big ol’ game of hide and seek.
Here are some older pictures of the game being played:

In January, I had a Thursday evening where I didn’t have anything planned. A friend with whom I’d discussed this game previously used this as an opportunity to put down a challenge. Needless to say, this challenge was readily accepted.
I had a great time. We used his set rather than mine, so it was my first time in a while not using the expansion. The expansion improves the combat system and adds in some new elements, but I like the characters from the core game better, so it was good to be limited to them.
We randomised factions and I ended up as the Galactic Empire. I went in with the intention of trying to be aggressive. I don’t feel I got off to a good start, but it certainly picked up a few turns in. I also got to do my favourite thing, which was to turn a rebel agent to the dark side. In this case, it was Mon Mothma that I captured and corrupted. Fantastic!
In the end, I did win with a couple of turns to spare. The aggressive play saw me complete fewer missions than I normally would as I spent more time – and more character actions – moving ships, rather than completing missions. It was good to change up how I play.
My opponent played well and I had an absolute blast with this game. It was definitely my favourite session of January!

I like this idea, might need to steal it. Game of the Month sounds great! Also, I’ve often been curious about this specific game, but its high price tag has always put me off. Looks amazing though! Also, I hadn’t realised I’m not following you back on Instagram, consider that remedied! All in all, what a great post 😃

Honestly it was much of a “hey, the item I was going to post about being released today wasn’t released. I’d better come up with something” sort of post. But I liked the idea.
