Resolutions 2023: January Roundup

It’s one thing to set resolutions, and quite another to hold oneself to them. I intend to review my progress monthly towards each of the resolutions. Welcome, then, to our first instalment for January 2023. I feel that I’ve made decent (if erratic) progress this month. Let’s start with a reminder of the resolutions:

Painting

  1. Finish 3 army-sized Warhammer projects (~2,000 points).
  2. Finish 2 starting forces for smaller, non-GW games.
  3. Paint a Warhammer Underworlds Warband.
  4. Paint a Blood Bowl Team.
  5. Paint 6 miniatures unrelated to current projects.
  6. Paint 365 miniatures this year.

Gaming

  1. Play 40 different games.
  2. Play a new (to me) skirmish game.
  3. Play 3 non-D&D Roleplaying games

Writing

  1. Complete 12 book/game/media reviews.
  2. Release 3 titles on DriveThruRPG.

Painting

The month began in much the same way as 2022 ended, with me painting a range of very different, slightly random miniatures for various different armies and projects. I was particularly delighted to clear half-finished models from the backlog like Ravenak’s Gnashing Jaws and Kairos Fateweaver. In all, I painted 45 miniatures:

Project-wise, I seem to be focusing pretty heavily on Chaos, and I’m heading towards my 3 armies being my 40K Daemons, My reinvigorated Disciples of Tzeentch, and my Nurgle-themed Slaves to Darkness. I think the 40K Daemons is the most pressing of the projects so I have a suitable, usable army to play 40K with. I’ve been imposing the “no unpainted minis” rule on myself in Age of Sigmar, so I’d like to be able to do the same in 40K. I have my Necrons, but I just don’t have the depth in any one area to produce a good list.

I also completed half of my skirmish game resolution, by painting a Warband for Frostgrave (with a second nearly done). I’m slowly working away at some stuff for Stargrave, too. I feel like I’m on track in this area.

Gaming

I played a few different games in January. Here’s the list of games that I’ve played so far this year:

  1. Ticket to Ride (Europe & Nordic)
  2. Warhammer: Age of Sigmar
  3. One Night Ultimate Werewolf
  4. Dungeons & Dragons
  5. Star Wars: Rebellion
  6. Galaxy Trucker
  7. Century: Golem Edition
  8. Root
  9. Age of War

Some may be played multiple times, but my intention is to add to this list each month and see if I can hit that magic number of 40 different games.

I’m not any further on with my other Gaming-related goals. That’s ok. The skirmish games will hopefully follow when I get my warbands done, and the RPGs haven’t really kicked off yet this year. I do have some Cyberpunk coming up soon, though!

Writing

Okay, I’ve now gone over 20 weeks without missing a post day on NoRerolls. That feels pretty good! It’s not a resolution, though. How are those going?

Well, I’ve not done any reviews yet this year. I’d hoped to maybe get around to one in January, but I’ve just not quite managed it. This puts the pressure on a wee bit, as I’m no longer in a position to meet this by doing one per month. Still, it’s well within the realms of possibility.

In terms of my DriveThruRPG-related resolution, I think I’ve perhaps been a bit overly cautious. At the time of writing, I have two items complete. One is published the second is awaiting approval due to my lack of verification at the moment. A third title is on the way. I’m keen to get more out in the coming weeks and months, too. I just really enjoy putting these little booklets together. You can see my publisher page on DriveThruRPG by clicking here. I’m hoping to be fully verified by early March so that I can plan my releases a bit better. Currently, I need to submit everything into an approval queue before it can go onto the site. Soon!

It’s been a good January, I reckon!

  1. Some great looking minis you got done and I still really like the colors you chose for your Warband. I’m curious about publishing on rpgnow. We had an old game that we considered releasing there at one time, but wasn’t sure how to even get started.
