Completed: Unseen University Faculty

I’ve previously done a Creator Spotlight post on The Lost Hobbyist. Today, I’m sharing some minis from that creator that I have printed out and painted up.

In the peculiar realm known as Discworld, where the flat disc spins lazily through space atop the backs of four gigantic elephants standing atop the shell of a colossal turtle, wizards are a breed apart. They exist as a strange confluence of magic, curiosity, and sheer eccentricity.

A Discworld wizard is a creature unlike any other, often garbed in long robes that trail behind them like a comet’s tail. Their pointed hats, leaning dangerously toward preposterous heights, serve as a beacon of their position in society—a mark of their wizardly prowess or, sometimes, an indicator of their rather wobbly grasp on reality.

These wizards are the embodiment of idleness and intellectual idiosyncrasies. Their true power lies not in commanding great forces or wielding magic with a flick of the wrist but in their ability to ponder the profound mysteries of the universe while imbibing prodigious amounts of tea. They are skilled in the art of appearing knowledgeable on any subject, regardless of whether they have truly comprehended it or are merely uttering nonsense in the most confident manner possible.

Wizards on the Discworld are members of the Unseen University, a venerable institution of magical learning that possesses a sprawling campus filled with ancient tomes, impossibly complex magical contraptions, and a faculty of eminent but delightfully eccentric professors. They gather in the Great Hall, an awe-inspiring chamber where they pontificate on matters arcane, debate the nature of magic, and, more importantly, feast on extravagant banquets that make even the gods themselves envious.

Despite their intellectual prowess, the average wizard’s grasp on the practicalities of life can be tenuous at best. Simple tasks such as remembering to wear trousers or navigating the university’s winding corridors without becoming irretrievably lost can be challenging endeavors for these scholars of the arcane. Yet, their lack of practicality is overshadowed by their propensity for calamity. In the hands of a wizard, even the simplest spell can transform into a cacophony of unexpected consequences, leaving the landscape littered with toads, singed eyebrows, and the occasional summoning of things best left unsummoned.

But for all their quirks, wizards remain an essential part of Discworld’s tapestry. Their peculiar blend of intellect and bumbling charm infuses the world with an unyielding sense of whimsy and wonder. With each spell gone awry and every outrageous statement uttered, they embody the essence of Terry Pratchett’s beloved Discworld, where the absurd and the magical coalesce in a riotous dance that captivates readers and makes them smile knowingly at the wizards’ fumbling antics.

Here are some wizards wot I painted:

The prints were alright. There were a few misprinted bits, most of which you can’t really see in the pictures. The minis were fun to paint, which is largely why I picked them. I’m enjoying spreading the painting a big more, doing miniatures less for jst completing an army and more because I just want to paint them. I think that’s why I’ve gotten through my last few models so quickly.
