Humble Bundle: Warhammer Chronicles 2023 (Black Library)

There have been a few Black Library bundles on here before, both in ebook and audiobook form. This latest offering gives us quite a mix of content; some of which I had not seen before, and some I had not expected to see here. We’ll take a look at some highlights and interesting items from the bundle once we’ve been through the usual technicalities.

As is usual for these bundles, the available content is split across a few different tiers, each at a different price point. As you move up the tiers (there are three in total), you also get all of the content from previous (lower) tiers.

The three tiers in this bundle add up to 27 items. The first 8 items (starting from the bottom of the gallery below) will set you back a mere £0.78. Adding a further 8 items (for a total of 16 items) brings the cost up to £7.80. Adding a further 11 items (completing the 27-item bundle) will cost you £14.05. This feels really reasonable for the amount of content you’re getting, here:

There’s actually some fantastic content here, and there’s a good mix of new and old. Among my favourite items this bundle are the four Vampire Genevieve books. The first of these was published in 1989 and the series seems to have been grandfathered into the Warhammer Horror line. I remember reading Drachenfels back in the late 90s and absolutely loving it. The new covers are so much cooler than the old ones, even if they do lack the pulpy charm of the venerable originals.

You’ve got some more recent gems in here as well, including Gloomspite. That one was a fun read. On the 40K side, Indomitus was also a decent book that helped to develop the current state of the Imperium ever since Guilliman woke up and started running around with his big-marines.

Finally, it’s potentially interesting to see a lot of Bretonnian content here, particularly in the run-up to the (maybe) release of The Old World. Given the prominence of Bretonnia in these previews, I wonder if the inclusion of Knight Errant and Knight of the Realm was a wee example of brand/release synergy. Hopefully!

All in all, this is a pretty great bundle with a good mix of new and interesting novels with some absolute classics. I’d push anyone to pick this up and dive into the assorts worlds of Warhammer. It’s well worth the price of admission.

    1. Depends what setting you want to read about. I think the best are probably the Horus Heresy series. These take place 10,000 years before warhammer 40,000 and are fantastic both in their own right and in establishing the setting.

The series is pretty huge, but opens with a little trilogy of Horus Rising, then False Gods, then Galaxy in Flames.

      1. I’ve only really watched YouTube’s and skimmed some of the rule books lore. I’ll have to check out the books you’ve mentioned. I couldn’t find anything tyranid related where the tyranid weren’t the antagonist 😛

      2. Most books have the humans as the protagonists. One worth maybe reading is Day of Ascension by Adrian Tchaikovsky. I’ve long liked his books and this is his first warhammer novel.

It’s about the Genestealer Cults, so is Tyranid-adjacent, at least.

Although a big fan of Adrian Tchaikovsky and the GSC, I’ve not read it yet myself, but I’m told it’s excellent. Got the audio book sitting waiting for me.
