5 on Friday 11/08/23

It’s Friday, and here on No Rerolls that means it’s time for an all-new 5 on Friday. We’re going to start with 5 exciting releases for this week before moving on to our usual digest of some of our favourite articles from the past week. Of course, we’re slow readers, so don’t be surprised if there are some articles that are a little older – these are just some of the great articles we happen to have actually read in the past week.

Releases & Previews

Every week there are many games, books, and miniatures released. This will probably be a mix of previews, preorders, and releases, and with release dates being the way they are in this industry, it’s always pretty approximate. Excuses out of the way, here are 5 of the releases that caught our attention this week:

Games Workshop releases Skabbik’s Plaguepack for Underworlds – As good a game a Underworlds is, I don’t tend to get it to the table. I suppose I ultimately don’t care enough or I’d make more of an effort, like I so with Age of Sigmar. I do love the consistently great miniatures, though! This latest gang features some rather gorgeous-looking Skaven miniatures:

I’m tempted to pick this up just for the gorgeous, new Plague Priest. All of the Skaven warbands have been stunning, and this one is the best yet.

Renegade launches preorders for Werewolf: The Apocalypse 5E –  Well, hey, more 5th edition World of Darkness games! I really enoyed the current edition of Vampire, so it’s cool to see Werewolf be given an update as well:

Werewolf has never been my favourite WoD game. I much prefer Mage and Changeling, as well as Vampire. That said, it’s still great to see this newest edition of Werewolf: the Apocalypse. I hope they do a lot with the Pentex corporation. I really enjoyed them in previous editions.

AliceFo launches a Kickstarter campaign for some chibi monster miniatures – This is just a simple little campaign that offers 5 chibi monster STLs for £5. Not bad, eh?

The mini themselves are very nice. They’re pretty typical of the chibi style popularised by games like Super Dungeon Explore and Arcadia Quest. There’s not much here, but then the price does reflect that. This is a nice project.

Wyrd releases Tiri Core Box for Malifaux – I really like the look of Tiri and her Bygone-coded followers. I love Malifaux, but the miniatures do tend to be very hit-or-miss for me. This set, and the sets that synergise with it, definitely represents a hit!

I’ll likely pick this lot up once I paint up my Leviticus crew. It’s always handy to have a couple of gangs for teaching the games. I’m so behind on the story of Malifaux that I have no idea where Tiri and friends fit in. I need to fix that.

1985 Games launches Kickstarter campaign for their new RPG, Obojima –  I’ve looked at a few titles by 1985 Games in the past and I just haven’t been all that interested. Thematically and visually I just didn’t really care. That’s changing now, as their latest offering, Obojima, looks excellent:

The Ghibli-esque visual and whimsical tone is really appealing. It’s a pity it uses 5E rules (a ruleset largely built for combat) but at least that will make it accessible to the legions who only really play 5E stuff. I’m very stoked for this book. It’s pretty exciting!

Blog Posts & Articles

The meat of 5 on Friday, the articles are listed in no particular order, so let’s get into some recommendations:

Cities of Sigmar: Rating the Battle Tactics @ Plastic Craic I enjoy this sort of post; the type that picks one really specific aspect or angle and really drills down in depth. That it’s done in the classic Plastic Craic tone just makes it all the better. A good read about what is going to be a really interesting Battletome.

Hunter: the Reckoning (H5) – A Troubling Start @ Far Fathom Gaming  Oh, this is disappointing. It does seem as though this edition is a bit light on background and story. I’ll likely still pick this up at some point, but I can’t say it looks to be a priority at the moment.

Mordheim Scenery 1 @ Tabletop Fantasy This is a fantastic terrain piece, and I love the step-by-step walkthrough of how it was built and painted. Fantastic post!

REVIEW: Regency Cthulhu @ Taskerland Another review that pours some cold water on a book I was excited for. It seems from this writeup that the Regency Cthulhu supplement just isn’t quite what it should be. A useful read for the adjustment of expectations.

Hobgoblin Battle Report and Review @ Comrade’s Wargames Hobgoblin is still super intriguing to me. Like the author of this post, I’m not convinced that I ultimately want a rank and flank style game in my life at the moment, but I am keen to take a look at this one to see if it changes my stance. A good, reflective review.

It’s been quite a while since my last 5 on Friday, so there have been a lot of posts on the blog since then:

This week, I’m expecting to have some mini finished up, a new RPG post for Saturday, and a Throwback Thursday post about online play in RPGs.

Catch y’all soon!
