5 on Friday 18/08/23

It’s Friday, and here on No Rerolls that means it’s time for an all-new 5 on Friday. We’re going to start with 5 exciting releases for this week before moving on to our usual digest of some of our favourite articles from the past week. Of course, we’re slow readers, so don’t be surprised if there are some articles that are a little older – these are just some of the great articles we happen to have actually read in the past week.

Releases & Previews

Every week there are many games, books, and miniatures released. This will probably be a mix of previews, preorders, and releases, and with release dates being the way they are in this industry, it’s always pretty approximate. Excuses out of the way, here are 5 of the releases that caught our attention this week:

Forgeworld releases Bilerot Vomitflesh, a new star player for Blood Bowl – Another fantasy star player for Blood Bowl! This time, it’s one dedicated to Nurgle!

Bilerot fits in perfectly with the aesthetic of the current Nurgle team and the model has a satisfying chunkiness to it. I also do love Nurgle miniatures that come with a wee Nurgling pal. This might be worth grabbing if I ever manage to get my own Nurgle team painted up!

Ravensburger releases first three starter decks of Lorcana –  Most of my knowledge of Lorcana has come from the ongoing legal issues between Ravensburger and Upper Deck, and some previews of the incredible artwork that’s been produced for the game. The actual release of the game has therefore snuck up on me:

I don’t think I’m going to get into this game. I just don’t do CCGs. The whole structure doesn’t appeal. I am tempted to grab two of these sets and have a couple of games, though. I think this is a big enough release that it’s worth having an idea of the game from the whole zeitgeist perspective. And that art is gorgeous…

Monte Cooke Games releases Old Gods of Appalachia on DTRPG – I’ve never listened to the podcast on which this game is based, but I’m keen to. The game reads as a very interesting and unique take on the cosmic horror genre popularised by the likes of H. P. Lovecraft.

The setting is close to our real world, delightfully dark, and beautifully illustrated. The game uses the proven Cypher System. Yeah, this one is tempting.

Detroit by Night supplement for Vampire: the masquerade released on the Storytellers Vault – My favourite city in Vampire: The Masquerade is Gary, Indiana. Gary, as portrayed in WoD, is a city in decay, which gives a real backdrop of desperation. This book seems to be setting out a similar refrain, particularly given the background of a recent Second Inquisition attack.

My only slight concern, based on the page count and some comments I’ve seen, is that the content might just be a wee bit sparse for the price tag. I’d be curious to take a flip through it, though.

Modihpius releases Titan Forge’s Five Parsecs from Home miniatures on Wargames Vault –  I’ve looked previously at Five Parsecs From Home. I like the theme. The rules feel interesting. I just find it hard to really care all that much for solo miniatures games.

I do love Titan Forge, though. Even if you’re not into Five Parsecs From Home, these could easily see use in other games, such as Stargrave. I actually have these STLs from their Patreon, and it’s cool to see them being pushed in other places.

Blog Posts & Articles

The meat of 5 on Friday, the articles are listed in no particular order, so let’s get into some recommendations:

Narrative Night – Cleansing of Cratonia @ Woehammer A writeup of the progress on the Path to Glory campaign I’m playing in. At the time of writing, I’m looking to schedule my second game. I’m enjoying getting to grips with the Ogors!

Marvel United: Painted Core Set @ Azazel’s Bitz Box Great job! The whole group looks fantastic, and these sorts of games just feel so much better when you’re playing with a painted set. I’m sure the kids will love them.

INSPO: The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August by Claire North @ Taskerland An interesting read for a couple of reasons. Firstly, I like to make posts like this one, drawing on books, TV Shows, Songs and the like to inspire RPGs. Secondly, this novel sounds really interesting!

A Question of Scale @ A Loft Full of Lead Yeah, this is a thing. This scaling issue is something I’m trying to be reasonably careful of, but which I know I am falling afoul of in my Flesh-Eaters. I put together some Beast Flayers the other night and they’re just not the right size. I might still paint them up, because I’ve done the work and they do look good, but they’re just not the right scale and it’s really noticable.

Cities of Sigmar: Hobby Free for All @ Plastic Craic This is similar to the wishlisting projects posts I trot out from time to time. It’s good timing too, as I’ve long said that the Cities book (along with the Deepkin one, actually) makes for a great book for creating proxy/converted/printed armies.

It’s been quite a while since my last 5 on Friday, so there have been a lot of posts on the blog since then:

This week, I’m hoping to finish a bunch of miniatures for the Flesh-Eater Courts. I’ve also written an RPG post for tomorrow and have been updating some galleries.

Catch y’all soon!
