It’s one thing to set resolutions, and quite another to hold oneself to them. I intend to review my progress monthly toward each of the resolutions. Welcome, then, to our roundup for September 2023. Let’s start with a reminder of the resolutions and where we were at the end of August:

- Finish 3 army-sized Warhammer projects (~2,000 points). (Aug Status: 1/3 complete)
- Finish 2 starting forces each for 2 smaller, non-GW games. (Aug Status: 1/2 complete)
- Paint a Warhammer Underworlds Warband. (Aug Status: no progress)
- Paint a Blood Bowl Team. (Aug Status: no progress)

- Paint 365 miniatures this year. (Aug Status: 395/365)

Onward, to September!
Painting
After a couple of months of solid painting, I’ve only done one model this month. I might have burnt myself out a bit. My intention was to continue on with the Flesh-Eater Courts after making some progress with the Crypt Ghouls and Ghoul King. The Crypt Horrors turned out to be a bit more involved than I expected. I also really don’t like painting metallics. I will finish them, but I’ve taken away the rush; hobby time should be fun, not an obligation.
Having resigned myself to not having the FEC done in time, I am likely going with Troggoths instead. With that semi-decided, I picked up and painted Trugg, the newest Troggoth miniature:

I’m pretty happy with how Trugg turned out. He was initially way too red, but a bit of Zandri Dust drybrushed on brought the colour down to more acceptable levels.

- Frostgrave
This month, I added two more games to this list:
- Architects of the West Kingdom
- Warhammer Underworlds
- Warcry
Well, that’s me managed my goal of playing 40 different games this year. This month’s featured game is one that I played for the first time this month. I also managed to get some old favourites back to the table, with games of Century and Root, among others.
I had a particularly good time with Warhammer Underworlds. I have an intro game of this every year or so and it never quite clicks with me. I enjoyed it a lot more this time, and I particularly liked The Exiled Dead and how they played.
A good month with some good games. October is when I normally start considering the annual Top 50 list, and I think I’ll have plenty of new games for this year’s list.
Writing
Some highlights for this month include:
- A review of Still Game and the release of a related Fiasco Playset
- Some thoughts on RPG morality and villain design
- A review of Munchkin
- Some ideas about playing through novels that are not necessarily obvious RPG fodder
- The start of a new series on RPG etiquette
My reviews of Still Game, Munchkin, The Autograph Man, and Architects of the West Kingdom actually see the completion of my reviews resolution. I’ll still be writing another few reviews this year, but it’s cool to strike a second resolution off this month.
