Bundle of Holding: Flying Circus

As a concept, Flying Circus was both intriguing and puzzling to me. The quasi-Germanic fantasy setting is really interesting, but I wasn’t sure about how the actual gameplay would work. Well, that’s not quite true. I knew that the game was a PbtA game, so it would be pretty solid, mechanically. What I wasn’t sure about was player interaction. Surely the cockpit of a plane is quite a solitary place, leaving little room for interaction?

Well, doing a bit of reading shows that the game has been generally well-received and is seen as a good and innovative use of the PbtA system. The authors admittedly tried to make what is essentially Porco Rosso in game form. That appeals to me hugely as Porco Rosso is not only my favourite Ghibli offering, but also just my favourite movie, period. I may have mentioned this before and done a bit of painting around it…

He turned out great, didn’t he? FDM, too!

So, with that little consideration in mind, let’s look at the bundle from the good folk over at Bundle of Holding! This is a single-tier bundle featuring a handful of items. It will set you back $12.95 and contains the following items:

The bundle costs half the price of the core rulebook which is, of course, included in this bundle. That core book includes everything you need to play including, as usual for PbtA games, the playbooks. It’s got a good mix of aerial aircraft in the airy air and some cool fantasy elements.

The bundle also includes Horrors of the Heights, which contains a ton of new content. There are new creatures, rules, ideas, and more. It’s not a huge supplement but there’s a lot in here, especially once you add on the two aircraft packs that are also in the bundle and which give you more aircraft to incorporate into your game.

I still don’t know if this is a game that I’d like. It’s mechanically solid, because of the PbtA foundation, and there’s some really unique theming. Worth a look, at least.
