StoryBundle: Halloween 2023

StoryBundle is a website that presents of bundle of sci-fi and fantasy novels, novellas, and stories from both new and established writers. This time, we’re heading into October with a Halloween theme. As usual, there are two tiers to the bundle. The first will set you back $5 and get you four titles:

  • Unexpected Monsters by Annie Reed
  • Hair Raising by Kevin J. Anderson
  • FantasyLife and Other Stories by Kristine Kathryn Rusch
  • Halloween Harvest edited by Mark Leslie

There are not always books by established writers in these bundles, but the inclusion of a Kevin J. Anderson book is a big plus, here. He’s just a consistently fantastic author who, although known for sci-fi, wrote a lot of horror earlier in his career.

The rest of the titles in this first tier are short story collections. The one that appeals most is probably Annie Reed’s collection of short stories which put new twists on classic monsters.

Up your pledge to $20 and you will get not only the four items listed above, but also a further six items:

  • Celtic Midnight by Anthea Sharp (StoryBundle Exclusive)
  • Three Sheets to the Wind edited by Dean Wesley Smith
  • Catacomb by J.F. Penn
  • From Out of the Night: And 13 Other Chilling Tales by Mark Leslie (StoryBundle Exclusive)
  • Firegazer by Rebecca Cantrell (StoryBundle Exclusive)
  • Halloween & Beyond by Robert Jeschonek (StoryBundle Exclusive)

What’s interesting here is the fact that most of these items are StoryBundle exclusives. I’m not sure that this is a huge selling point unless you are already a fan of a particular author who is featured in this manner.

This tier, like the first, is heavy on short stories. I think that the short story is a fantastic format for horror as it allows authors to condense fear, tension, and dread into a concentrated narrative, delivering a potent emotional impact in a brief space. By focusing on a single, unsettling idea or moment, authors can create an intense atmosphere, build suspense, and unleash terror swiftly, leaving readers with lingering unease long after the story ends. The brevity of a short story demands concise and powerful storytelling, forcing writers to craft every word and detail with precision, enhancing the overall spine-chilling experience.

If you’re a fan of horror writing, and have a particular penchant for short stories, then this bundle might be worth a look. We are heading into spooky season, after all!
