Humble Bundle: Best of Warhammer RPGs

There are a wealth of RPGs available to the discerning Warhammer fan who wants to roleplay in his or her chosen setting. For fans of Warhammer Fantasy, there’s Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, which is now in its fourth edition. This edition is a real return to form and has been deservedly celebrated.

For fans of Age of Sigmar, you’ve got Soulbound. It’s a dice pool game with a cool character creation system that ties in pretty directly with the units and models available for the game. I like this game a lot and have recently started a new campaign, which I’m really enjoying.

For those who prefer the 41st millennium, there’s Wrath & Glory. This system felt a little bit rough when it first came out, but the newer edition feels a lot more polished and is actually really good. We’ve got a Gm at club who keeps threatening to run a game, and I really hope he pulls the trigger on it soon!

This bundle from Humble Bundle has all of these games. That’s fantastic. it doesn’t have all the content for each game, as it feels like the target here was breadth, rather than depth. That’s fine; I like it.

Unusually, it’s also a well-constructed bundle for a change. Humble Bundle has a really bad habit of not giving you any actual rules until the upper tiers, making the lower tiers effectively useless. This bundle makes good use of the starter sets at lower tiers to give access to the core rules. It’s fine that the big core rulebook are in higher tiers, because they are still giving you functional games in the lower tiers. Bravo, Humble Bundle!

It’s about time…

Given how cheap the top tier is (less than £15 for all 23 items), I’m just going to look at the top tier, which contains the following items:

Let’s start with Soulbound. You get the starter set and the core rulebook. Those are central as you’ll need at least one of them to play. Champions of Order gives you more character options for your Order-based campaigns. That makes sense as, although Order is the worst Grand Alliance in AoS, it’s the core of Soulbound and we’re adding to what’s here rather than opening something new. Breadth rather than depth, see? Steam and Steel is interesting as well, giving a big focus on crafting and what it means to the different cultures of the Mortal Realms.

Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, like Soulbound, starts off with the Starter Set and core rulebook. On top of this, you get some cool supplements. Up in Arms expands on character paths with a martial theme, along with extra equipment and some cover rules for combat, along with lots of other bits and pieces. Rough Nights & Hard Days is a collection of 5 interlinked adventures intended to be played either individually, or as a contiguous campaign. Also, gnomes!

For fans of Warhammer 40,000, you’ve got, again, the core book and starter set for Wrath & Glory. There’s a pattern here, see? Redacted Records contains loads of new character options, more background information about the Gilead System setting, some cool rundowns of different cults, and space hulks! The Forsaken System Player’s Guide has yet more info on the Gilead System, a look at the local factions, new playable races (including Kroot!), new archetypes, rules for downtime, and more.

In addition to all of this content, you can also tell yourself that you’re a good person! This bundle will benefit CHF, an Irish charity that supports sick children.

For the price, this is a fantastic deal. The content is not comprehensive for any of the games. You’re not buying the full range of any one game. What you’re getting is a good intro to each one, and that’s cool, especially for the price. I strongly recommend this one. I also think we should be reinforcing good behaviour as Humble Bundle finally starts to put together sensibly-structured RPG bundles!
