This post from 2017 features a selection of games that I felt needed the use of expansions to really keep them fresh. I stand by my choices. I pick out a couple of deck building games, which definitely need the expansions to stay fresh after a while.
The dungeon crawl games also benefit from more variety as you continue to play them.
I’m not sure what I would add today if I were revisiting this idea. I’m less into expansions for board games than I was back then. I feel that more often than not, they’re not really necessary.
