5 on Friday 01/12/23

It’s Friday, and here on No Rerolls that means it’s time for an all-new 5 on Friday. We’re going to start with 5 exciting releases for this week before moving on to our usual digest of some of our favourite articles from the past week. Of course, we’re slow readers, so don’t be surprised if there are some articles that are a little older – these are just some of the great articles we happen to have actually read in the past week.

Releases & Previews

Every week there are many games, books, and miniatures released. This will probably be a mix of previews, preorders, and releases, and with release dates being the way they are in this industry, it’s always pretty approximate. Excuses out of the way, here are 5 of the releases that caught our attention this week:

Games Workshop releases a new Codex for the Necrons – Tenth edition rumbles on as we get into more codex releases. This time, it’s the turn of the Necrons. This should be one that interests me.

I’ll likely pick this up, though I don’t really know if I’m going to use it. I like the idea of playing 40K, but halfway through I just can’t shake the feeling that I’d be having more fun playing another game. I’ve not used the Necrons in quite some time though, so it’ll be fun to break them out.

Crushpop Productions releases Hives on Wargame Vault –  Wargame Vault is a site I really like, but the vast majority of stuff on it just doesn’t interest me. It tends to be heavy on the historical side of things, which just isn’t my particular area. I love it when something on that site really jumps out at me, like Snarling Badger’s titles tend to. This time, it was Hives:

A simple little sci-fi skirmish games, this has some strong Necromunda vibes to it. With a little money sitting in my DTRPG account, I light pick this one up for a skim.

Dark Space by Kabuki Kaiser available on DTRPG –  this was actually released in October, but was the focus of a review this week. I really enjoyed it and thought it worth sharing again.

This is a really cool fusion of dark, gritty sci-fi and H. P. Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos. There are 8 investigations here, and they are all really strong. What’s really impressive is the quality of writing and the way that the book is able to flow as prose.

Modiphius releases their new RPG, Dreams and Machines – A new game by Modiphius? Cool. A new game by Modiphius that I hadn’t actually noticed getting released. Unusual.

Using Modiphius’ 2D20 system, Dreams and Machines is all about rebuilding. The world, at least as it it had previously been known, has already ended, largely thanks to a war with the machines. You’re now looking to rebuild. The game looks alright, and it’s nice to see more 2D20 games that are not based on licensed properties.

Cubicle 7 releases their Imperium Maledictum roleplaying game –  Cubicle 7 continues to make good use of their Games Workshop licenses. This time, it’s another Warhammer 40,000 RPG, Imperium Maledictum:

Whereas Wrath & Glory, Cubicle 7’s more established 40K RPG, is a lighter system than the Fantasy Flight RPGs that were previously available, Imperium Maledictum returns to that crunch. It returns to the D100-based gameplay of titles like Dark Heresy, Rogue Traders, Only War, and so on. I imagine some fans will really welcome this.

Blog Posts & Articles

The meat of 5 on Friday, the articles are listed in no particular order, so let’s get into some recommendations:

History Behind the Cards – A Look at Vijayanagara: The Deccan Empires of Medieval India, 1290-1398 from GMT Games – Card #9 Mongol Invasion @ The Players’ Aid – This series is worth a look. I’m not the biggest historical gamer, but what I do like about historical gaming is the associated learning that can occur. It’s cool to learn about the time periods in which you’re playing.

Hobby update (1st December) @ Dreadaxe Games These look great! I need to get my GSC done next year. I really like that the author is branching out into the Imperial Guard section of the army, too. That’s an aspect that I agree is really fun.

New World Of Darkness Titles Coming Soon From Renegade Game Studios @ Tabletop Nerds Oh, some of these sound interesting. I like the focus on romance in one of these titles. It’s not the romance in particular that I like, but rather the focus on roleplaying over crunchy rules and combat. This suggests that someone at Renegade has the right attitude to the World of Darkness series.

November 2023 Gaming @ Dude! Take Your Turn! Some good games on here this month! Ark Nova is one that I’m really keen to try, as is Combat Commander. Ark Nova would be the easier sell to local groups, though. Merchant of Venus is one on my shelf that I’ve not actually played yet. It would be good to get to that at some point.

Word Bearers HQ @ Calixus Crusade I love the Word Bearers. I’d love to revisit Chaos Space Marines (my army of choice for my of third edition 40K) and the Word Bearers are a strong contender for that project. These models look great; thanks for sharing!
