Boarding the 2024 Hobby Train

From mid-December to early January, it seemed that hobby time was at a premium. This is not unusual, of course. Part of it for me was losing a bit of direction after finishing off the resolutions. Part of it was just being busy.

I’ve started putting together the first bits and pieces for this year, and it’s all a bit of a mixed bag. I don’t feel I’ve really built up much steam yet, and the first couple of weeks of January are a bit disjointed due to a mix of work and family commitments.

As I said, though, I have started. That counts for something!

First up, I did a bit of building. I set a resolution to do a couple of Mapifaux crews this year, so I’ve started with Tiri:

I picked up most of the models from the ‘bygone’ keyword. They look really interesting, and I was keen to do something less horror-based than my Jack Daw and Leveticus crews. These are going to be fiddly to paint!

I thought that the Flesh-Eater Courts would be my first project of the year, but the amount of prep is proving to be really substantial. There’s a lot to do. Here’s just some of it in progress:

Most of the printing I need done was done last year, but I’m only now getting to the processing. I think it will be a wee while until the Crypt Guard, Crypts Flayers, Morbheg Knights, and more Crypt Ghouls are ready to paint.

In terms of immediate painting, I’ve been looking at the Soulblight, but I’ve also broken out some slightly random bits and pieces:

We’ve got 10 Putrid Blightkings, the Pestilens-themed Underworlds warband, and a proxy C’Tan (check out not 1, not 2, but 3 batches of recommendations for these!) on the slate. The Blightkings seem to have been on the slate for a long time, truth be told. I want them shifted!

I wonder what will finish up first! I’m also keen for things to settle down for next year so that I can focus on getting Saturdays back to the longer-form RPG content that it had been getting used for during much of 2023.

I hope your 2024 hobby life is off to a good start!
