Humble Bundle: Call of Cthulhu

Call of Cthulhu is an RPG designed by Sandy Petersen and first published in 1981. Based on H.P. Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos, the game is set in a world of cosmic horror where players take on the roles of investigators confronting supernatural mysteries, cults, and eldritch horrors. The game system uses percentile dice, emphasising investigation, sanity management, and storytelling over traditional combat. Players often face overwhelming odds and the impending threat of insanity as they delve into mysteries that defy human comprehension. Call of Cthulhu has become one of the most iconic and enduring RPGs in the horror genre, known for its immersive storytelling and the potential for characters to encounter unimaginable cosmic terrors.

Humble Bundle is currently running a fantastic offer for fans and prospective fans of Call of Cthulhu. They are running a nice, big bundle full of rules, supplements, adventures, and the like. There are different tiers to the bundle but, honestly, I see no reason not the grab the whole thing. It’ll set you back £19.88 for these 25 items:

Okay, there’s a lot of content in here. Let’s take a look at some of my own highlights:

  • Investigator Handbook and Keeper Rulebook: These are the core books. Really, as an individual, you don’t need both. The Keeper Rulebook has all of the content from the Investigator Handbook, but both are great books. You’ll need one to get started, so it really needs to be the highlight.
  • Berlin, The Wicked City: This is a really solid supplement that was well-received on release. The book contains an overview of 1920s Berlin along with a trio of scenarios for your games. These scenarios take place between the end of the Great War and the rise of Hitler and the Nazis. It’s a prime period for some pulpy adventure.
  • Reign of Terror: Another setting book, this one takes us to the terror of the French Revolution. As with the Berlin book, this is a setting book that establishes the period and also contains some standalone adventures. In this case, it’s two interlinked scenarios.
  • Mansions of Madness: This compilation of adventures gets a good writeup. The stories are all really accessible and play up the investigative aspects of the game.

Down Darker Trails, Cthulhu Dark Ages are another pair of good settings book for the wild west and dark ages, respectively. There are loads more adventures here, including solo content. There’s a bestiary, a book on magic, and the starter set. This is a pretty comprehensive bundle, all in all.

Is it worth the sub-£20 price tag? Yes. It is.

It’s probably more valuable to a GM than a player, but it’s really good for anyone looking to get into this game. Everything you need is here, and then plenty more stuff on top of that. You’ve got so much choice in here when it comes to adventures and settings. This bundle is fantastic.
