Amidst the epic quests, perilous dungeons, and intricate character arcs of the typical roleplaying game lies a treasure often overlooked: the pure joy of whimsy. Today, I’d like to celebrate the whimsical side of RPGs, where lightheartedness, laughter, and the unexpected come together to create moments of sheer delight and endless imagination. I’d like to advocate for lighthearted adventure over crunchy combat.
In media, whimsy refers to a quality of being fanciful, playful, or lighthearted. It involves a sense of amusement, delight, and a departure from the ordinary or serious. Whimsical elements can be found in lots of different forms of media, including literature, film, art, and other entertainment.
In literature, think of the works of Lewis Carroll. Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is a classic example. The story is filled with bizarre characters and surreal situations, brought to life by delightfully playful language. In film, the works of Studio Ghibli stand out. Films like Miyazaki’s My Neighbour Totoro embrace whimsy with their imaginative worlds and magical, fantastical creatures. Surrealist art, like the works of Salvador Dali, often incorporates whimsical and dreamlike elements that challenge the conventional and the rational. Even quite mainstream shows for kids, such as Adventure Time can embrace this concept. Adventure Time is known for its whimsical and surreal adventures in the land of Ooo, featuring colourful characters and fantastical settings. In music, we can look to compositions such as Camille Saint-Saëns’ “Carnival of the Animals,” which uses whimsical themes to create playful and imaginative atmospheres.
Whimsy, we understand, often involves a departure from reality and a celebration of the fantastical and imaginative aspects of life, providing a sense of joy and wonder in the audience.
Whimsy in RPGs can be a playful breeze that sweeps through the gaming table. It’s the moment when a bard decides to serenade a dragon instead of slaying it, or when a mischievous gnome convinces the kingdom’s nobility to attend a tea party with forest sprites. It’s the laughter that erupts when the most improbable plan actually works. It’s the shared experience of embracing the unexpected and finding joy in the otherwise-absurd.
In a genre often marked by stress, seriousness, and fantasy violence, the whimsy of RPGs offers a much-needed escape. There’s a place for these games, and I really appreciate games that put specific stresses on players, but this is a realm where the laws of physics need not apply, and the improbable becomes real. The joy of whimsy reminds us that, even in the darkest of dungeons or the bleakest of landscapes, there’s room for laughter, creativity, and unexpected moments of joy.
A whimsical mindset can be applied to any RPG, but some are built with whimsy in mind. Some of these titles include Ryuutama, Chuubo’s Marvelous Wish Granting Engine, Electrical Bastionland, Wanderhome. There are plenty more, but these are just a few titles that really wear their tone on their respective sleeves.
That all-important whimsical mindset often leads to the most creative solutions to a given problem, or at least takes you on an interesting journey. When players embrace this spirit, they’re more likely to value the journey over the destination, and to think outside the box and, indeed, beyond the ruleset. One can unearth such ingenious ways to overcome challenges. It’s in these moments that ordinary dice rolls transform into epic tales of ingenuity, sparking both laughter and camaraderie.
Players who embrace this approach to play (I’m trying not to say “whimsy” in every sentence…) bring their characters to life in vibrant and unforgettable ways. These characters have a way of adding colour and humour to the RPG world. They’re not just adventurers; they’re vibrant, quirky individuals who make the journey all the more enjoyable. This is not to say that whimsy equates to randomness, for that is most definitely not the case.
Moments of whimsy foster camaraderie among players. Shared joy over a journey well travelled creates lasting memories and strengthens the bonds between gaming companions. It’s the inside jokes, the ridiculous plans, the shared adversity, and the collective storytelling that forge friendships as strong as any forged in battle-based play.
In an ideal game, the thread of whimsy twists through our games, adding a splash of color to the narrative. It reminds us that, while we may embark on epic adventures, we should never forget to find joy in the whimsical, the silly, and the unexpected. It’s the laughter that echoes through the caverns, the gnomish inventions that defy logic, and the shared stories that become legends. So, let’s celebrate the whimsy that we can being to RPGs, for it is in these moments of delight that we discover the true magic of collaborative storytelling and imagination.
