Kickstarter-Watch: Food Fight!

I like little Kickstarter project, particularly when they’re from new companies who are just starting out. There’s less room for bloat and overambition with small projects, and little companies are what Kickstarter is for. The fact that it’s become a preorder platform to move the risk associated with projects from an established company to consumer is just a cynical, cynical shame. Lookin’ at you, CMoN! Stonemaier is a good example of Kickstarter done right. They used it for their first few games and then, once established as a proper company, they moved onto a more traditional production and funding model.

This project is the first one from Quirky Unlimited. It promises to deliver a delightful range of food-based RPG character models in an STL format for 3D printing. It looks really cool.

Now, this might seem something of a random project, but if we look out into the wider hobby ecosystem, there is some context. There’s been a fair amount of food-based RPG content in recent years. There’s been things like Dimension 20’s Crown of Candy (broadcast via Dropout.tv), a Kickstarter campaign for The Tasty Lands of Silverplate, and even the Feast of Legends roleplaying game put out by Wendy’s. Food and RPGs seem to be potent combination, is what I’m saying!

That gives us some immediate and obvious options to actually use the miniatures form this campaign. That’s great!

The campaign is for 12 miniatures. 6 represent the Sweet faction, and 6 the Savoury faction. The original concept art for these miniatures was produced by the fantastic art_veider whilst the digital sculpting was undertaken by Pavel Graf. All 12 miniatures look fantastic. Here are some highlights based on what really jumped out at me:

Fantastic, aren’t they?

Is it a good deal, though? Well, you’re getting 12 models, or at least the files to allow you to print 12 different miniatures. For €4 you get to pick one of these miniatures. That’s fine. It’s not a great price, but it’s not bad either. The whole set of 12 will cost you €25. That’s way better value, and at the time of writing there are still early bird options to get them cheaper, too.

For €59 you can get the merchant license, allowing you to print and sell these miniatures. Again, there are early bird options to get these cheaper. Something I don’t like about this campaign is that these licenses are not limited. I don’t think having the licenses open to unlimited number is doing a good service to your customers, but then they are selling and it’s not like I’m the target audience, so what do I know?

In terms of delivery, we’re looking at March of this year. That’s fine. The quick turnaround is also indicative of the lack of risk in this project. The STLs are ready to go. They’ll be delivered after the funds have cleared. Fantastic. The files will also be delivered to MyMiniFactory, which will make retention of and access to the files quite easy.

Yeah, in the course of writing this post, I’ve actually backed the project. It’s a clear endorsement from me! Go have a look and see what you think.
