Bundle of Holding: Cthulhu Hack

Whilst Call of Cthulhu remains the most well-known roleplaying game based on H. P. Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos, there are plenty of others. Achtung! Cthulhu, Trail of Cthulhu, The Laundry, and Delta Green are among the popular ones. Another such game is Cthulhu Hack.

Based on The Black Hack, Cthulhu Hack is a nice, quick, simple, accessible roleplaying game from Just Crunch Games that really embraces the mythos. Character creation, notably, is rather quick, helping players to get into the action as soon as possible.

This bundle features the new second edition rules. The first tier of the bundle costs $5.95 and contains the following items:

These are quite short, easily digestible books. I actually nearly picked up the first edition rules and supplements back at Tabletop Scotland 2019. I liked the small form factor of the books, and I’m definitely a fan of the mythos, too. Taking a flip through the books, they seemed really well done.

Of the supplements in this tier, I’m really interested in The Dark Brood. I like Shub-Niggurath (aka The Black Goat of the Woods with a Thousand Young) as a threatening presence. This puts her cult front and centre.

By paying the threshold price of $18.01, you get everything in the first tier, plus a few more:

Island of Ignorance really appeals to me. I love the idea of some mythos adventures and investigations in Australia during the period of settlement. Australia is a fascinating place, and the unknown nature of it during the early years of its occupation as a prison island makes for a lot of interesting potential.

The Dee Sanction is, like Island of Ignorance, a bit of a period piece, though this one is also a standalone game. It sees players working for Queen Elizabeth in Tudor England. I like these cool, little, self-contained games, and the time period really appeals to me.

The bundle seems pretty good. In addition to the highlights I’ve picked out, there are a whole bunch of inventors. I think that the first tier of this bundle represents really good value for money. That first tier is golden. The second tier has good stuff. I am quite excited for Island of Ignorance. There’s just now quite as much there. I’d be tempted to get both tiers, but the first is the real highlight and value prospect here.
