Humble Bundle: Magpie Games

Magpie Games has been around for a good while now, but they were never of my favourites. That seems to be changing, though. Like, really. The more I’ve looked into their stuff, the more impressed I’ve been. It is exciting, then, to find a Humble Bundle featuring their numerous offerings.

The 29 items below will cost you £19.72:

The biggest draw here for me is Avatar Legends. This is a fantastic game, based on the PbtA system, which made it into my top 50 this year, despite my never actually having seen the show(s). I just loved the game. Now I’ve seen the show, and I can get even more out of the game!

I’m also really interested in Root. I took another look at it recently when it was featured in a Bundle of Holding, and it does appeal to me as game that seems less about just fighting and more about the journey. We like that. It’s also well-established that we love the Root board game, too!

Bluebeard’s Beard is also really interesting, and I previously looked at it in the context of inclusion and representation in RPGs. It’s a haunting and evocative RPG that reimagines the classic fairy tale through a feminist lens. Players collaboratively assume the roles of different aspects of a bride exploring her new husband’s mansion. The game explores themes of feminine horror, power dynamics, and the unraveling of the bride’s psyche. Bluebeard’s Bride challenges traditional notions of storytelling by placing the players in the shoes of a female protagonist (indeed, the same female protagonist) and exploring the complexities of womanhood through a dark and atmospheric narrative. The only problem is that I’m not sure who I’d actually play this with.

There’s also a bunch of stuff with which I am less familiar. I remember liking the look of Cartel when I featured it in a 5 on Friday. Masks gets a good writeup, but isn’t something that is, thematically, for me. The same goes for Pasion de las Pasiones. The rest, I am unfamiliar with.

The bundle represents pretty fantastic value and I wholeheartedly recommend it. The only thing is, unlike most Humble Bundles, I didn’t actually look at the top tier of this bundle. The top tier has all the same digital content, plus a physical item. It’s got a physical copy of the Avatar Legends Starter Set:

It’s a good price for the box, as it only brings the bundle up to £27.70. Still a good deal! I’m just not likely to go for that myself. I’m also not sure how much we’re looking at for postage.

So, aye, good bundle! The digital offerings are really solid, and there’s a cool physical option here, too.
