5 on Friday 29/03/24

It’s Friday, and here on No Rerolls that means it’s time for an all-new 5 on Friday. We’re going to start with 5 exciting releases for this week before moving on to our usual digest of some of our favourite articles from the past week. Of course, we’re slow readers, so don’t be surprised if there are some articles that are a little older – these are just some of the great articles we happen to have actually read in the past week.

Releases & Previews

Every week there are many games, books, and miniatures released. This will probably be a mix of previews, preorders, and releases, and with release dates being the way they are in this industry, it’s always pretty approximate. Excuses out of the way, here are 5 of the releases that caught our attention this week:

Games Workshop releases Zondara’s Gravebreakers for Warhammer Underworlds – Underworlds is a great game and format. I love that Games Workshop keeps putting out interesting, cool miniatures for it, often exploring previously unseen aspects of various factions. The latest offering is an undead warband:

These are nice minis. The zombies are very similar to the current GW zombies, so they’re not all that exciting. The Werewolf-looking dude is fantastic though, and the Necromancer is even better. I really love that model!

Archon Studio releases their Undercity Hideout set –  I really like Archon’s Dungeons & Lasers range. It seems to pack a lot of minis into some very reasonably priced sets. The Dragons are also really fantastic. The terrain is generally less appealing. I just feel that most of their sets are small and ‘bitty’. This new set is a lot bigger, though.

Oh, sure, this is quite pricey, but it’s a good set and the price feels reasonable. I really like the scale of this thing, and it definitely does not suffer from that ‘bitty’ problem.

Clanbook: GANGREL for V5 released on Storytellers Vault – Gangrel were never quite among my favourite clans, but I do appreciate them for what they are. They deserve some love and attention. That, at least, is happening via the Storytellers Vault:

At an initial glance, this book seems very well produced and the content looks interesting. I’m going to take a fuller look in the coming weeks, as I was sent a copy to review. I’m looking forward to diving in, as I’ve not spent much time reading VtM material for quite a while.

Rookery Publications and Modiphius start taking preorders for Dark Deeds – Andy Chambers and Mark Gibbons are absolute legends when it comes to Warhammer and Games Workshop. It’s cool to see them team with Rookery Publications and Andy Law of WFRP4 fame to release Dark Deeds:

This game is very well-presented with beautiful pieces, cards, and artwork. That should really come as no surprise with Mark Gibbons being involved. I’m going to preorder this and I’m looking forward to the sort of backstabbery that the game promises.

Atomic Mass Games releases Certified Guild Squad Pack for Shatterpoint – Mando! This is the core Mandalorian cast rendered in miniature, and they’ve really done justice to the characters:

I like nice, characterful sets for Shatterpoint, and this set once again ticks that box. It’s also strangely cool to see a miniature representation of the late Carl Weathers.

Blog Posts & Articles

The meat of 5 on Friday, the articles are listed in no particular order, so let’s get into some recommendations:

Have you ever cut a ship in half? @ Imperial Rebel Ork – Fantastic bit of scenery work, here. This is a great terrain piece with a fun story attached to it. I also agree that it’s really ideal for Turnip28.

Callis and Toll – David Annandale @ Tragic Fangirl There are times when reviews are very effusive. This is known. It’s great to see how much this reviewer loved this book and the characters more widely. A fun read!

Trash Nurglings @ Deathzap Oh, these are gross. I love them! I really liked the previous article about the Great Unclean One. Add in these chaps and this army is going be disgusting and creepy and incredibly well-themed. I’m excited to see how the rest of the army shapes up.

I Want to Go to There @ Space Biff I hadn’t heard of this game, but it looks quite appealing, if a little flat for me. The review is generally positive, but lukewarm. We all know games that hit us that way, I suppose.

Always Create a Welcoming Environment @ Spent Glory Solid advice. This is something that all gaming groups should read. There’s so much here that is easy to implement, but which can make a huge difference in tone, moon, and player retention.

There have been a few posts since my last 5 on Friday:

Another quite good week in hobby. I have finished 21 miniatures, which is the same number as last week and I once again have another 21 nearly done. I’d hoped to finish the Chaos Dwarfs before I head south this weekend.

I didn’t. Oh, well.

No new purchases, but I’ve printed another 10 infantry for the Skaven, in the form of some Plague Censer Bearers.

Painting, purchasing, and printing totals so far this year:

  • Purchased: 29 minis
  • Printed: 67 minis
  • Painted: 152 minis
